The CUPRA Leon Hatchback is a five-seat family hatchback with a sporting streak, sitting alongside the Formentor and Born in CUPRA's line-up as the brand's traditional hot-hatch-shaped car. It's about 4.40 m long, so it fits normal parking spaces and normal lives.

It suits drivers who want something sharper and more theatrical than a standard family hatch, but who still need five seats, a usable boot and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Reviewers consistently praise the handling and the lifted interior quality after the 2024 update; the touchscreen draws more criticism.

The choice here is simple enough: one body style, two powertrains (petrol or plug-in hybrid), three everyday trims and three performance versions.

About the CUPRA Leon Hatchback

The Leon Hatchback is the current Leon, on sale in this form since 2024, and it's the version most people picture when they think of the car: five doors, five seats, front-wheel drive throughout.

Its heritage is genuine - this was the fast SEAT Leon before CUPRA became a brand in its own right, and road testers still rate the chassis and steering highly. Petrol versions carry 380 litres of luggage with the seats up; the plug-in hybrid gives up space to its battery at 270 litres.

Every version comes with a 5-year / 90,000-mile manufacturer warranty, and servicing falls due every 24 months or 18,600 miles, which keeps the maintenance side of a lease predictable.

Leon Hatchback or Leon Estate?

The Hatchback is the shorter, tidier car; the Leon Estate is the one to pick if boot space decides it. Both seat five and stand 1.44 m tall.

At about 4.40 m the Hatchback is roughly a quarter of a metre shorter than the Estate's 4.66 m, and carries 270-380 litres behind the rear seats depending on version, against 470-620 litres in the Estate. Towing is close: up to 1,700 kg braked for the Hatchback, up to 1,700 kg for the Estate too. Browse both on the full CUPRA Leon range page.

Why lease a CUPRA Leon Hatchback?

Because the standard kit list is unusually complete for a family hatchback, and leasing lets you hold the car for a fixed term while that specification is still current. Every Leon Hatchback, whatever trim, gets the same safety and comfort foundations.

That means adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front and rear parking sensors, three-zone climate control and ambient lighting as standard.

On safety, it's autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam across the board, backed by a 5-star Euro NCAP rating (88% adult occupant, 86% child occupant, 82% vulnerable road users, 77% safety assist). Worth knowing before you order: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit.

Which Leon Hatchback powertrain is right for me?

Two choices: a petrol that needs nothing but fuel, or a plug-in hybrid that rewards you for charging it. Both drive the front wheels.

Petrol

Petrol covers the widest ground, from 148 bhp up to 296 bhp, with a manual or an automatic and 1.5 or 2.0 litres. WLTP economy runs from 37.2 to 52.3 mpg and 0-62 mph takes between 5.7 and 8.9 seconds. Simple, and the only way to get a manual gearbox.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre turbo with a 25.8 kWh battery for 201 to 268 bhp, automatic only. You'll want a charger: the best version takes 2.5 hours from 0-100% at 11 kW at home, or 10-80% in 26 minutes at a 50 kW public charger. Company car drivers usually gravitate here.

Which Leon Hatchback trim should I choose?

Six to pick from, and the split is clear: V trims are the everyday cars, VZ trims are the 296 bhp performance versions.

V1

The starting point, and better equipped than most entry trims. It brings the 12.9-inch media system with navigation pack, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with follow, wireless phone charging and keyless go, on 18-inch "Garbi" alloys with cloth upholstery. A fixed towbar and sports seats are available as options.

V2

V2 is the comfort step. It adds heated front seats, a rear-view camera, KESSY Advanced keyless entry and multicoloured ambient lighting, plus an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory and 19-inch "Mistral" alloys, with cloth upholstery. An opening panoramic roof is optional.

Shadow Edition

Shadow Edition is mostly about the look, building on V2 with darker detailing and 19-inch alloys. Mechanically it earns its keep too, with matrix LED headlights added at this level. Leather upholstery is newly added here, and the panoramic roof and fixed towbar remain options.

VZ1

Now the performance versions, all 296 bhp, all front-wheel drive. VZ1 is the leanest of them: CUPRA Supersports seats, a heated steering wheel with satellite buttons, 19-inch "Polar" alloys and cloth upholstery. With 296 bhp, VZ1 is among the fastest cars here.

VZ2

VZ2 adds the leather pack with memory function for the front seats, and a useful run of driver assistance: self-steering parking, blind-spot monitoring and active lane-change assist. Wheels are 19-inch "Mistral" alloys. It's the sensible one if you cover motorway miles at speed.

VZ3

VZ3 tops the range with 19-inch Hailstorm forged machined black and copper alloy wheels on 91Y tyres, over the VZ2 kit. Cloth upholstery is specified here, with the panoramic roof and fixed towbar optional. Availability on VZ3 comes and goes - ask our team what's live.

CUPRA Leon Hatchback FAQs

Yes, within reason. It seats five, has five doors, a 2.68-2.69 m wheelbase that reviewers say gives generous rear legroom, three-zone climate control and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating with 86% for child occupant protection. The firm ride is the trade-off.

It will drive without charging, but you lose the point of it. The 25.8 kWh battery takes 2.5 hours from 0-100% at 11 kW on the best version, or 10-80% in 26 minutes at 50 kW. Our electric and hybrid guides cover home charging.

It depends on the powertrain. Petrol versions give 380 litres with the rear seats up; the plug-in hybrid drops to 270 litres because the battery sits under the floor. If that matters, check the individual deal before you order.

Five years or 90,000 miles from CUPRA, which comfortably covers a typical lease term. Plug-in hybrid versions also get a 5-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty guaranteeing 70% of capacity. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,600 miles.

Yes. Braked towing is 1,500-1,600 kg on petrol versions and 1,700 kg on the plug-in hybrid, with 680-750 kg unbraked. A fixed towbar is a factory option on every trim, and it must be ordered with the car on a lease, not added later.

That changes constantly, and it isn't always the entry trim. Rentals depend on what stock and terms are available at the time, so the honest answer is to check the live deals below, all of which are Hatchback versions. Our guide to choosing your car helps with mileage and term.
