The BMW XM is the M division's own flagship SUV: a five-seat, all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid that sits above every other BMW in the range for power and presence. It has been on sale in this form since 2022.
It's a big car for drivers who want a performance SUV that gets noticed. At 5.11 metres long and 2.01 metres wide, it takes up proper road space, and the styling divides opinion in a way few BMWs ever have.
The choice is simple: one body style, one plug-in hybrid powertrain producing between 469 and 738bhp, and two versions - the XM entry model and the Label.

The XM is only the second car BMW's M division has designed from scratch rather than adapting from an existing model, and it's the first M car built around a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That heritage matters to the people who buy one.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin, the rear-seat space and the sheer pace, and just as consistently criticise the ride on UK roads, particularly on the largest wheels. Road testers also note that the looks polarise, which is rather the point.
Practically, it's a two-row car: five seats, a 527-litre boot with those seats up and 1,820 litres folded. BMW covers it with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, with eight years or 74,500 miles on the battery.
Because the XM arrives generously equipped whichever version you pick, and leasing keeps you in a fast-moving corner of the market without owning the car at the end. Every XM gets a head-up display, 360-degree camera and built-in navigation as standard.
The seat specification is unusual even at this level: massaging, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and electric memory. Four-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a wi-fi hotspot and adaptive suspension are all standard too.
Parking a car this size is made easier by front and rear sensors, automatic parking assist and the surround-view camera. Driver-assistance kit including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking is available as a factory option on both versions - worth confirming on the exact vehicle before you order.
Towing capacity is 2,700 kg braked, with a fixed towbar available as an option.
There's one powertrain across the XM range, offered at two power outputs, and it's a plug-in hybrid.
A petrol engine of 3.0 to 4.4 litres pairs with a 29.5 kWh battery (25.7 kWh usable), an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. Power runs from 469 to 738bhp, 0-62mph from 3.8 to 5.1 seconds depending on version, and top speed is 155mph.
You'll want somewhere to plug it in. Charging peaks at 11 kW, and the best version takes 2.8 hours for a full charge from a home or workplace AC point - so an overnight top-up is realistic if you have off-street parking. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover how plug-in hybrids behave day to day.
| Plug-in hybrid | |
|---|---|
| Boot | 527 litres |
| Power | 469–738 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 29.5 kWh |
| 0–62 mph | 3.8–5.1 s |
| Braked towing | 2700 kg |
Two versions, and the real difference between them is power rather than equipment, because the standard specification is already deep on both.
The entry XM produces 469bhp through all-wheel drive, and rides on 22-inch Double Spoke Style 922 M alloy wheels with leather upholstery inside. Adaptive LED headlights, a three-spoke M leather steering wheel, a wireless charging tray, ambient lighting for the centre console, sports seats and a powered tailgate are all included.
Deals on this version come and go depending on what funders and BMW have available, so ask our team if you can't see one listed.
The Label is the performance version, with 738bhp and the quickest 0-62mph time in the range. Mechanically it's the significant step; in kit terms it's essentially a differently presented XM, on the same 22-inch Double Spoke Style 922 M wheels with leather upholstery, and the same optional driver-assistance and towbar packages.
The Label is currently available from £1,869.28 a month.
If the XM is on your shortlist, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE are worth a look, along with the wider BMW lease range.
