It sits at the very top of BMW's X6 line, above the standard car, and alongside the more upright X5 M as the coupe-roofed alternative. If you want the same engineering with a squarer rear end and more headroom in the back, that's the car to look at.
The choice here is refreshingly simple. One body, one engine, one trim - M Competition - and then a list of options, including the Ultimate Pack, that decides how plush your particular car ends up.

The X6 M is BMW's M division applied wholesale to a coupe SUV: 617bhp, 750Nm, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, wrapped in a 4.95m five-seat body with a 580-litre boot and BMW's three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.
BMW created this shape back in 2008, and the X6 has been dividing opinion ever since. Reviewers are consistent about what the M version does well: relentless straight-line pace, huge grip, tight body control and a beautifully built cabin.
They're equally consistent about the trade-off. The ride is firm, and road testers repeatedly note that it never fully settles on poor surfaces, even in the softest damper setting. That's the deal you're signing up for.
Because the X6 M arrives heavily equipped, so you're not building a car from a long options list to get the basics. Adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster and four-zone climate control are all standard.
Driver assistance is thorough: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking.
On the practical side there's a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start, heated front seats with electric memory, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a wi-fi hotspot. Boot space runs from 580 litres to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded, and braked towing reaches up to 3,000 kg.
One thing worth flagging before you order: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit. On 22-inch alloys with low-profile rubber, that's a conversation we'd suggest having with our team about tyre cover.
There's only one, so this decision is already made for you: a 4.4-litre turbo petrol V8 with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. No plug, no charging, no range anxiety - just a very large fuel bill if you enjoy yourself.
Eight cylinders, 750Nm, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It covers 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and runs to a 155mph top speed, or up to 180mph depending on the version. Official economy is 22.4mpg, with CO2 of 285g/km and an 83-litre tank.
That CO2 figure puts it at the top of the company car tax bands, so this is usually a personal lease rather than a company car choice. Insurance group 50 is the other number to check before you commit.

There's a single trim, M Competition, so choosing is really about options and colour rather than working through a spec ladder. Every car gets the full 617bhp powertrain and all-wheel drive as standard.
M Competition rides on 22-inch "Style 818m" alloy wheels with Alcantara and leather upholstery, and adds adaptive LED headlights, a BMW Individual leather-finished instrument panel, the Parking Assistant Professional Pack, enhanced Bluetooth hands-free with wireless charging telephony and an ambient light interior pack. Automatic parking assist and sports seats are included.
The M Competition is currently available from £2,061.16 a month.
Options worth knowing about include an opening panoramic roof, massaging front seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, roof rails and a fixed towbar. The Ultimate Pack bundles the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof, the Bowers & Wilkins diamond surround sound system and the front seat massage function.
Given the firm ride, ventilated and massaging seats are the options we'd think hardest about. If you tow, specify the fixed towbar at order stage - it can't be added later in the way a dealer accessory can.
