View dealThe BMW 3 Series Estate is the load-carrying version of BMW's compact executive car: five seats, a boot of 410 to 500 litres depending on version, and a body about 4.71 metres long. It's the choice for drivers who want family space without moving to an SUV.
It sits alongside the 3 Series Saloon, with a powered tailgate and roof rails fitted as standard.
The choice here is simple enough. One body style, two powertrains - Petrol or Plug-in hybrid - and five versions to pick from: Sport, M Sport and M Sport Pro, plus the M340i and M340i Black Edition.

This is the current, seventh-generation 3 Series, on sale in Estate form since 2022. It carries five people, swallows 410 to 500 litres of luggage with the rear seats up and up to 1,510 litres with them folded, and comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently rate it among the best estates of its size to drive, praising the steering, body control and cabin quality, and they consistently point out that it isn't the roomiest car in the class - roomier, cheaper estates exist if outright space is all you're after.
What keeps it on shortlists is the combination: it tows up to 1,800 kg braked on the Petrol versions, yet still handles like a 3 Series.
Both cars seat five and measure 4.71 m long on a 2.85 m wheelbase, so the difference is at the back. The Estate's boot holds 410-500 litres seats-up against the Saloon's 375-480 litres.
The Estate is also slightly heavier, at 1,585-1,895 kg kerb weight against 1,515-1,835 kg, and both bodies tow 1,500-1,800 kg braked. If you'd rather see the two side by side, the full 3 Series range is worth a look.
Because every version arrives well equipped, and on a lease you're paying to use the car rather than own it - so the standard kit list matters more than the list price. Heated front seats, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone climate control and a powered tailgate are fitted throughout.
So is the safety and parking kit families actually use: autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, self-steering parking, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Roof rails come as standard too, and every car has a 75 kg roof load limit if you're adding a box or bikes.
Worth knowing before you order: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit.
There are two: Petrol, or the Plug-in hybrid. Both use an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and neither is offered with a manual.
Power runs from 181 bhp to 387 bhp, with 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines, rear- or all-wheel drive, and WLTP economy of 38.7-41.5 mpg. It has the bigger boot at 500 litres and the higher towing limit, 1,600-1,800 kg braked. Nothing to plug in.
A 2-litre turbo plus a 22.3 kWh battery (19.5 kWh usable), 288 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 6.0 seconds. It charges at up to 11 kW, taking 2.3 hours from 0-100% on the best version. It only makes sense if you can plug in regularly; the boot drops to 410 litres and towing to 1,500 kg braked. Our electric and hybrid guides cover how PHEVs work day to day.

Every trim gets the same core equipment, so the differences are wheels, lights, seats and driver assistance.
The entry version: 181 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 17-inch "V Spoke Style 778" alloys and cloth upholstery. You get Connected pro, a three-spoke multifunction sport leather steering wheel, heated front seats, steering-wheel cruise control, climate control and voice control. A head-up display and 360-degree camera are options here.
Adds sports suspension, front sports seats, a three-spoke M Sport multifunction flat-bottom leather steering wheel and the Parking assistant pack, on 18-inch "Double Spoke Style 848m" alloys. Lane-keep assist and active lane-change assist become available as options. The firmer set-up is the one to try before you commit.
Steps up to 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 995m" alloys and adds Adaptive LED Headlights, automatic high beam and privacy glass. If you do a lot of unlit A-roads, the headlights alone make the case. Adaptive cruise control and a panoramic roof remain options.
Then there are the two performance versions, both with BMW's 387 bhp engine.
387 bhp, all-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds. Over M Sport Pro it adds electric memory seats and ambient light projected into the door entry areas, on 18-inch "Double Spoke Style 848m" alloys. A retractable towbar is available as an option.
An edition of the M340i with a darker look and 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 995m" alloys, plus Adaptive LED Headlights. It's about appearance rather than extra ability - the mechanical package is the same 387 bhp all-wheel-drive car.
Separately, three factory packs can be added to a trim: the Tech Pack brings a navigation system, the Pro Pack brings Adaptive LED Headlights, and the combined Tech/Pro pack brings both. Eleven paint colours are offered across the range, from Alpine white to Tanzanite blue. If you're unsure how far up the range to go, our guide to choosing your car is a sensible starting point, or ask our team.
If you're cross-shopping, the Audi A5 and Volvo V60 cover similar ground, the BMW 2 Series sits a size below, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA takes a more style-led approach. More from the brand is on our BMW leasing pages.
