The Audi Q8 is a five-seat luxury SUV with a coupe-ish roofline, a 4.99 m body and a cabin built to the standard Audi reserves for its flagships. It's the sporting, style-led alternative to a seven-seat family 4x4.

It suits drivers who cover long motorway miles, want a car that feels expensive from the driver's seat, and don't need a third row. Reviewers consistently rate the build quality and the refinement; they're less complimentary about visibility out of those shallow windows.

The choice is simple enough: one body, three powertrains - petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid, all automatic and all-wheel drive - and five trims, from S Line up through Black Edition, SQ8 Black Edition, Vorsprung and SQ8 Vorsprung.

About the Audi Q8

The Q8 is Audi's large luxury SUV: five seats, five doors, 4.99 m long on a 3.00 m wheelbase, and covered by a three-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. It's the current Q8, on sale in this form since 2023.

Where the Q7 plays the sensible family card, the Q8 trades the third row for presence and a lower, sleeker rear end. Boot space runs from 439 litres in the plug-in hybrid up to 680 litres in the petrol and diesel with the rear seats up, and up to 1,755 litres folded.

Road testers usually describe it as a supremely comfortable motorway car rather than a sharp one, with an interior that feels a class above. Every version tows up to 3,500 kg braked, which matters more to Q8 customers than the spec sheet suggests.

Why lease an Audi Q8?

Because the Q8 is generously equipped whichever version you choose, and leasing keeps you inside the manufacturer warranty for the life of the agreement. Every Q8 has a 360-degree camera, matrix LED headlights, heated front sports seats, electric seat memory and a powered tailgate as standard.

The technology is the draw. Built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, voice control and ambient lighting are fitted throughout, alongside autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and front and rear parking sensors.

Practically, you get privacy glass, power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and a tyre repair kit in place of a spare. The turning circle is 13.3 m, so it's a car that wants a decent-sized parking space - worth thinking about before you order.

Which Q8 powertrain is right for me?

Three choices, all automatic and all-wheel drive: a petrol, a 3-litre diesel and a plug-in hybrid. High mileage points to the diesel, a driveway charger points to the hybrid, and the petrol covers everything from the entry car to the 500 bhp SQ8.

Petrol

The petrol spans 335 to 500 bhp with an eight-speed automatic, covering 0-62 mph in 4.1 to 5.6 seconds depending on version. WLTP economy is 22.4-27.4 mpg, so it's the choice for drivers who value the performance and don't do big annual miles.

Diesel

The 3-litre diesel makes 282 bhp and 600 Nm, reaches 62 mph in 6.1 seconds and returns 33.2-34.9 mpg on the WLTP test. Nothing to plug in, and the best real-world range of the three. If you live on the motorway, start here.

Plug-in hybrid

The 3-litre turbo plug-in hybrid pairs a 22 kWh battery with petrol power for 389 bhp and 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds. It charges at up to 7 kW, taking 3.8 hours from 0-100% on the best version. It only makes sense if you can charge regularly at home or work.

Which Q8 trim should I choose?

All five trims are well equipped; the differences are wheels, cabin comfort kit and, with the SQ8 versions, a great deal more power. Work out whether you want the extra kit or the extra performance, then pick from there.

S Line

The starting point, with 21-inch "5 V Spoke" alloys, leather upholstery, sports suspension and sports seats. It has MMI navigation plus with MMI touch, wireless smartphone mirroring, heated front seats, camera-based traffic sign recognition, wireless charging, dual-zone climate and self-steering parking. The S Line is currently available from £889.94 a month inc VAT.

Black Edition

Black Edition is about the look rather than the kit list: the same equipment as the S Line, moved onto 22-inch "10 Y Spoke" alloys with darkened exterior detailing. Adaptive cruise control, a panoramic roof, blind-spot monitoring and a retractable towbar are all available as options. The Black Edition is currently available from £913.76 a month inc VAT. Against the S Line, that is currently £23.82/mo more expensive (inc VAT).

SQ8 Black Edition

This is the performance Q8: 500 bhp, 23-inch "10 Spoke Trapezoidal Style" alloys and four-wheel steering. Over the Black Edition it adds a 360-degree camera with top view, park assist with parking aid plus, ambient lighting package plus, a head-up display, and massage and ventilation for the front seats. The SQ8 Black Edition is currently available from £1,169.75 a month inc VAT. Against the Black Edition, that is currently £255.98/mo more expensive (inc VAT).

Vorsprung

Vorsprung is the comfort-led flagship, on 22-inch "5 V Star Spoke" alloys with laser headlights. It adds an electric panoramic glass sunroof, a three-spoke heated leather multifunction wheel, remote park assist plus, driver and passenger seat memory, adaptive cruise control, heated rear seats and blind-spot monitoring. SQ8 Vorsprung

The SQ8 Vorsprung takes the Vorsprung's equipment and the 500 bhp SQ8 hardware, on 23-inch "10 Spoke Trapezoidal Style" alloys, with the styling treatment the badge implies rather than fresh equipment. The SQ8 Vorsprung is currently available from £1,417.79 a month inc VAT. Against the Vorsprung, that is currently £296.44/mo more expensive (inc VAT).

Audi Q8 FAQs

It's a five-seater, so if you need six or seven seats the Q8 isn't the answer. For a family of four or five it's very good: a big boot, a comfortable back seat and a long-distance ride that reviewers consistently praise.

It varies by version. With the rear seats up you get 439 to 680 litres - the plug-in hybrid is at the smaller end because of its battery, the petrol and diesel at the larger. Fold the rear seats and you have 1,589 to 1,755 litres.

It will drive without charging, but you'd be carrying a 22 kWh battery for nothing. Charging is at up to 7 kW, with a 0-100% top-up in 3.8 hours on the best version - an overnight job on a home wallbox. Our petrol, diesel or electric guide goes into the trade-offs.

Yes. Every Q8 tows up to 3,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked, which covers most twin-axle caravans and trailers. A retractable towbar is a factory option, so specify it at order stage - it can't be added to a lease car later without our agreement.

Three years or 60,000 miles from Audi, whichever comes first, plus a three-year paintwork guarantee and 12-year anti-corrosion cover. The plug-in hybrid's battery has eight years or 100,000 miles of cover guaranteeing 70% of capacity. Check the warranty mileage against the annual mileage you choose.

On most like-for-like trims, the diesel is often the cheaper monthly rental at the moment. A rental reflects the gap between the car's cost and its forecast value at the end of the term, plus interest, so a version that holds value better can cost less per month even with a higher list price. That can change whenever pricing is refreshed.
