The Audi Q7 is Audi's seven-seat luxury SUV: a 5.06-metre, three-row car built for families who cover long distances and want the third row to be an everyday feature rather than an emergency measure. Air suspension and four-wheel steering are standard on every version.

It sits at the top of Audi's SUV range alongside the more style-led Q8, and it's the one to pick if seats matter more than roofline. Seven seats, a 581-litre boot with the rear seats up and braked towing of up to 3,500 kg give you the measure of it.

The choice here is simple. One body style, one powertrain - a 3-litre diesel with 295 bhp, an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive - and four trims: S Line, Edition 1, Launch Edition and Vorsprung.

About the Audi Q7

The Q7 is a large, comfort-first SUV that carries seven people in genuine quiet. This is the current, third-generation car, and reviewers consistently single out its ride on the standard air suspension, its hushed motorway manners and the quality of the cabin materials.

Road testers are equally consistent about the caveat: the first two rows are generously sized, but the third row suits children better than adults on long trips. The 581-litre boot with the rear seats up grows to 1,980 litres with them folded, which is where the shape really earns its keep.

Audi covers it with a 3-year, 60,000-mile warranty, a 3-year paintwork guarantee and a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,600 miles.

Why lease an Audi Q7?

Because the standard specification is unusually complete for a car this size, which means the version you order is close to the version you actually want. Every Q7 gets air suspension, four-wheel steering, matrix LED headlights, a 360-degree camera and adaptive cruise control.

Which Q7 powertrain is right for me?

There's one engine in the range, so the decision is really whether a big diesel suits your mileage. If you tow, or you do long motorway runs with the car loaded, it does.

3-litre diesel, 295 bhp, automatic, all-wheel drive

No plug, no charging - you fill it up. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder produces 630 Nm of torque, drives all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic and pulls 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds, with a top speed of 146 mph. WLTP economy is 36.2-38.2 mpg and CO2 is 194-206 g/km depending on the version.

Which Q7 trim should I choose?

All four trims share the same 295 bhp diesel and all-wheel drive, so you're choosing wheels, seats and parking technology rather than performance.

S Line

The entry point, and far from sparse. It brings 20-inch "5 Arm Aero" alloy wheels in graphite grey gloss turned finish, Alcantara and leather upholstery with S-embossed front sport seats, a wireless smartphone interface, camera-based traffic sign recognition, park assist plus with manoeuvring assist, three-zone climate control, a powered tailgate and adaptive suspension. An opening panoramic roof, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are available as options.

The S Line is currently available from £992.22 a month.

Edition 1

Edition 1 is the comfort upgrade. It swaps to 22-inch "5 Spoke Tripod" black metallic gloss turned finish sport alloys, fine nappa leather with front sport seats plus, and adds ventilation and massage for the front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The opening panoramic roof remains an option.

The Edition 1 is currently available from £1,076.44 a month. Against the S Line, that is currently £84.22/mo more expensive.

Launch Edition

This is the technology step. Launch Edition adds 23-inch "Multi Spoke S Design" black metallic Audi Sport alloys, a panoramic roof with switchable transparency, a 3D and 360-degree surround view camera, park assist pro with remote functionality, an exterior ambient lighting pack, a head-up display, four-zone climate control, lane-keep assist and active lane-change assist.

The Launch Edition is currently available from £991.20 a month. Against the Edition 1, that is currently £85.24/mo cheaper.

Vorsprung

Vorsprung is about appearance rather than extra equipment: it takes the Launch Edition's kit and fits 23-inch "Multi Spoke S Design" alloys in a black metallic gloss turned finish. If you want the fullest specification with the most distinctive wheels, this is it.

The Vorsprung is currently available from £1,186.24 a month. Against the Launch Edition, that is currently £195.04/mo more expensive.

A Tech Pack is offered as an add-on rather than a trim, so it can be specified alongside your chosen version. Eight paint colours are offered across the range, including Midnight green, Daytona grey, Waitomo blue, Mythos black, Carrara white, Glacier white and Alopias blue.
