View dealThe Volvo C40 is an all-electric SUV with a lowered, coupe-style roofline. It suits drivers who want Swedish design and safety in a family-sized car, can charge at home or at work, and will trade a little rear headroom for how it looks.
It sits alongside Volvo's other electric models as the sleeker, more style-led take on the brand's smallest SUV shape. There's one body style, one powertrain family - electric only - and two trims, Core and Plus.
Range runs from 228 to 402 bhp, with 69–82 kWh batteries and front-, rear- or all-wheel drive depending on which version you choose. Everything is automatic.

The C40 is the coupe-roofed member of Volvo's compact electric SUV family, on sale in this form since 2021. Five seats, 4.44 m long, 413 litres of boot space with the rear seats up.
Road testers consistently praise the cabin quality, the comfortable front seats and the calm, quiet way it covers motorway miles. The common criticisms are equally consistent: rear visibility is poor thanks to the sloping roof and thick pillars, and back-seat space is a little tighter than the boxier alternatives.
Volvo covers it with a 3-year / 60,000-mile warranty, and the battery separately for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Euro NCAP awarded it five stars, with 92% for adult occupant protection.
Because the standard specification is strong and the running costs are predictable. Every C40 gets a fixed panoramic glass roof, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control and LED headlights.
The safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. That's how a car earns 89% for safety assist from Euro NCAP.
Practically, it's a five-seater with a 413-litre boot, a 2.70 m wheelbase and an 11.4 m turning circle, so town driving isn't a chore. Braked towing runs from 1,500 kg up to 1,800 kg depending on version, with 750 kg unbraked. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,000 miles. There's only one: the C40 is electric, with no petrol, diesel or hybrid version. What varies is battery size, power and how many wheels are driven, so the choice is about range and pace rather than fuel type.
Batteries run 69–82 kWh (66–79 kWh usable) with 228–402 bhp and WLTP range of 272 miles up to 340.5 miles. Drive layout varies from front- or rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, with 0-62 mph ranging from 4.7 to 7.4 seconds depending on version.
Charging is the thing to plan around. The best version takes 10-80% in 28 minutes at 200 kW, and the quickest home charge takes about 11 hours on a 7.6 kW wallbox - fine overnight, which is why we'd push anyone without off-street parking to think hard first. Two trims: Core covers the essentials generously, and Plus adds the comfort and driver-assistance kit most people notice day to day. Both use cloth upholstery and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Core rides on 19-inch 5 Double Spoke diamond cut/black alloys and includes Google Automotive Services, the fixed panoramic glass sunroof, a rear park assist camera and front park assist. Heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting and a retractable towbar are all available as options.
The Core is currently available from £576.28 a month.
Plus starts at 235 bhp with rear-wheel drive and 19-inch 5 Spoke alloys. Over Core it adds wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, a hands-free power tailgate, keyless entry and start, electric driver's seat with memory, and a heat pump.
The heat pump matters more than it sounds in a British winter - it keeps the cabin warm without leaning so heavily on the battery. Ambient lighting and a retractable towbar remain options.
The Plus is currently available from £806.47 a month. Against the Core, that is currently £230.20/mo more expensive.
