View dealThe Volkswagen ID.7 Estate is a big, five-seat electric estate built for people who carry a lot and drive a long way. A 605-litre boot, 4.96 metres of length and a WLTP range of up to 421 miles are the headline numbers.
It sits at the top of Volkswagen's electric line-up, above the ID.3 and the ID.4, and it's the closest thing the brand now offers to the old large petrol and diesel estates. Road testers consistently describe it as quiet, comfortable and unusually spacious in the back, and it has picked up electric-estate and large-family-car awards.
The choice here is refreshingly simple: one body, one electric powertrain family with a rear- or all-wheel-drive option, and three trims - Match Pro Plus, Match Pro S Plus and GTX Plus.

This is Volkswagen's largest electric car: a five-seat, five-door estate measuring 4.96 m long with a 605-litre boot, 1,948 litres with the rear seats folded, and a three-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty behind it.
Reviewers keep returning to the same two words - calm and roomy. Motorway refinement is a strength, rear legroom is generous, and the long-range versions genuinely change how often you stop.
The criticisms are consistent too: almost everything runs through the central touchscreen, brake pedal feel divides opinion, and the sporty GTX version is quick rather than thrilling. If you want an engaging drive above all else, look elsewhere. If you want to cover 300 miles without thinking about it, this is a strong candidate.
The Estate is the one to have if load space matters. Its boot holds 605 litres with the rear seats up against 532 litres in the ID.7 Saloon, and both open out to 1,948 litres with the seats folded.
Otherwise the two are near twins. Both are 4.96 m long, seat five, and tow between 1,000 kg and 1,800 kg braked depending on version; the Estate is a centimetre taller at 1.55 m.
So the Saloon is the pick only if you prefer its shape, and the Estate wins on the practical stuff. You can see both together on the full ID.7 range page, or browse the wider Volkswagen line-up.
Because the standard specification is unusually complete, which removes most of the option-list guesswork that makes ordering a car stressful. Every ID.7 Estate gets matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera and three-zone climate control.
Also standard across the range: massaging and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, electric seat memory, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a heat pump.
On safety, the ID.7 holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and every version carries autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and self-steering parking.
One point worth raising early: if you tow, the retractable towbar is a factory-fitted option, so it has to be specified at order.
There's one answer here: the ID.7 Estate is electric only, with an automatic drive and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive depending on the version you pick.
Battery capacity runs from 82 kWh to 91 kWh, power from 282 bhp to 335 bhp, and WLTP range from 360 up to 421 miles. Charging is 10-80% in 28 minutes at 200 kW on the best version, or 0-100% in eight hours on an 11 kW home supply.
It suits drivers who can charge at home or at work and want long motorway legs. If you're new to this, our electric car guide and our advice on charging an electric car are both worth ten minutes.

Three trims, and the gaps between them are narrower than you might expect because so much kit is standard on all of them.
The entry version, with a 282 bhp rear-wheel-drive motor, 19-inch "Hudson" alloy wheels and cloth upholstery. It includes heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and start with safelock, voice activation for navigation and phone, a hands-free tailgate, automatic parking assist and DAB radio. A retractable towbar and adaptive suspension are options.
Mechanically and practically the same car as Match Pro Plus - 282 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 19-inch "Hudson" alloys and cloth trim - with the difference being presentation rather than extra equipment. The same retractable towbar and adaptive suspension options are available.
The all-wheel-drive version, with 335 bhp, 20-inch "Skagen" alloy wheels and adaptive suspension as standard. It adds ventilated massage seats for the front and heated rear seats. Testers rate it brisk and composed rather than sporty; the hands-free tailgate and retractable towbar are options here.
Prefer to have the comfort kit without the extra power? The Int+ Pack adds ventilated massage seats for the front to a lower trim, while the Ext+ Pan Pack brings IQ.Drive and the exterior package plus with an electronic darkening panoramic sunroof, Area view including rear view camera and memory for park assist. The Int+Ext+ Pan Pack combines the two.
