The Corolla Hatchback is a compact five-door family car about 4.37 m long, with five seats, a boot of 313 to 361 litres depending on version, and a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. Reviewers consistently rate it as comfortable, well built and unusually economical in real-world driving.

The Corolla badge has been around for decades, and this generation is the one road testers describe as the best-looking of the lot. Praise tends to focus on interior quality, the standard equipment and hybrid efficiency; the common criticisms are rear space that's tighter than some rivals, and an engine note that gets vocal under hard acceleration.

Official economy runs from 57.6 to 62.8 mpg with CO2 of 100 to 107 g/km, which is what makes it a popular company car choice. Toyota quotes servicing every 12 months or 10,000 miles.

Corolla Hatchback or Corolla Estate?

Choose the Hatchback if you want the shorter, neater car; choose the Estate if boot space matters more than length. Both seat five, both have five doors, and both tow up to 750 kg braked.

The Hatchback carries 313 to 361 litres with the rear seats up and 1,004 to 1,052 litres folded. The Corolla Estate offers 581 to 596 litres seats-up and 1,591 to 1,606 litres folded, for roughly 28 cm more length at 4.65 to 4.66 m. Width and height are the same on both.

Why lease a Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

Which Corolla Hatchback powertrain is right for me?

There's one: a self-charging hybrid, automatic, front-wheel drive. No plug, no charging routine, no home wallbox needed.

Hybrid (self-charging)

A 1.8-litre or 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor and a small 1.8 kWh battery that recharges itself as you drive and brake. Power ranges from 138 to 193 bhp, 0-62 mph takes 7.4 to 9.1 seconds, and top speed is 111 to 112 mph.

Icon

Icon is the entry version, from 138 bhp, with 16-inch 5 double spoke silver metallic alloy wheels, cloth upholstery and a three-spoke synthetic leather steering wheel. It also gets a heated steering wheel, automatic high beam, air conditioning, LED low-beam headlights and Toyota's smart connect navigation with Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

Design

Design moves up to 17-inch 5 spoke silver alloy wheels and adds a front sliding synthetic leather armrest and rear privacy glass. You also get ambient lighting, power-folding door mirrors and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Upholstery stays cloth.

GR Sport

GR Sport is mostly about the look: 18-inch 10 spoke black machined face alloy wheels, fabric and synthetic leather upholstery, front sports seats and privacy glass with a UV filter. It doesn't change the mechanical package, so expect the same hybrid drive with a firmer visual edge.

Excel

Excel gets 18-inch 5 double spoke dark grey machined face alloy wheels, leather upholstery and a JBL premium sound system with eight speakers. It also adds a driver monitoring camera, a head-up display, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which is the pick if motorway miles dominate.

Two factory packs appear on some versions: the Bi-tone Pack, which brings 18-inch 10 spoke dark grey machined face alloys, a partially perforated steering wheel and a driver monitoring camera, and the Panoramic Roof Pack. Twenty-three paint choices are offered across the range, from Pure white and Sterling silver to Juniper blue, Scarlet flare and Super green/Black.
