The S Cross is the firm's belated attempt to cash in on the burgeoning crossover segment and its offering is one of the best around. The market leader is the Nissan Qashqai and the Suzuki rival is a well-designed and well thought out creation to steal sales from it. Suzuki is a renowned 4x4 manufacturer, particularly for small vehicles, and the impressive system has been installed in the S Cross to give it excellent levels of grip both on and off-road.
Under the bonnet there's a choice of two 1.6litre engines to choose from - a punchy diesel and a sprightly petrol unit. Both of them may only produce 118bhp but they have impressive torque figures: the diesel manages 320Nm while the petrol will create 156Nm. However, both are also cheap to run: the diesel should return around 70mpg with CO2 emissions of 110g/km and the petrol 50mpg with emissions of 130g/km. Of the pair, the diesel is the best all-round performer. It's a good at speed and really does underpin an excellent offering. There are four trim levels for the S Cross and all models come with a six speed manual transmission and the two top levels of trim get the firm's ALLGRIP four-wheel-drive system. Standard equipment includes reversing camera, climate control and keyless entry.
Other models come with a reversing sensors, satnav, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and alloy wheels. There's also manual air con, electric windows while the top spec gets a panoramic sunroof, heated leather seats and better headlamps. The styling of the S Cross is fairly bland but it hides a well-designed interior that is not only comfortable but practical too. Also, the touchscreen for the satnav and infotainment system is easy to get along with. Once behind the wheel, there's good feedback from the steering and the overall experience is quite impressive - the ride is certainly more engaging than some of its rivals. Despite the vehicle size it's an agile performer on winding country roads and comfortable cruising on motorways.
