It suits drivers who want a practical EV with genuine bad-weather confidence - rural roads, farm tracks, steep winter driveways - and who don't need the longest range in the class to be happy.
The choice is simple. One body style, one powertrain, and two trims: Limited and Touring.

The Solterra is Subaru's electric SUV, on sale in this form since 2022, measuring 4.69 m long with five seats and a boot of 441 to 452 litres depending on the version. It carries a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
Reviewers consistently praise the way it drives - body control that's tidier than most two-tonne electric SUVs manage, plus physical buttons for the things you actually use while moving. The common criticism is range and boot space against the best of the class, and an interior that's sensible rather than plush.
Road testers who've tried it on loose surfaces rate it well above the class norm.
Because the standard equipment list is unusually complete, so the decision isn't really about chasing kit. Every Solterra gets all-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, built-in navigation and a powered tailgate.
Safety and assistance kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors and automatic high beam. Euro NCAP awarded 5 stars, with 88% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection.
Practically, you get five seats, a heat pump for colder months, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, roof rails and braked towing of up to 750 kg. Servicing falls due every 12 months or 9,000 miles.
There's only one, so the question answers itself: the Solterra is electric only, with a 71.4 kWh battery, 215 bhp, automatic drive and all-wheel drive as standard. If you can charge at home or reliably at work, it fits most family routines.
The 71.4 kWh battery gives an electric range of up to 289 miles (WLTP), with 215 bhp and 336 Nm driving all four wheels through an automatic transmission.

Pick Limited if you want the smaller wheels, or Touring if the glass roof, synthetic leather and wireless charging matter more to you. Mechanically they're identical - same 215 bhp, same all-wheel drive.
The Limited is the entry trim and far from sparse: 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, satellite navigation, wired Android Auto, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, cloth upholstery and a rear-view camera. The Limited is currently available from £914.81 a month.
Touring adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a fixed panoramic roof with an electric sunblind, synthetic leather upholstery and wireless phone charging. The bigger wheels look the part, though range and boot space vary slightly by version. The Touring is currently available from £918.58 a month. Against the Limited, that is currently £3.77/mo more expensive.
