The legendary Porsche 911, designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (Nickname: “Butzi”), grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, was initially called the 901 in 1963. It was changed to 911 after Peugeot objected that the three-number combination with an ”0” in the middle had contravened their trademark. Thus, production of the 911 began in 1964.

The original 911s were air-cooled rear-mounted flat 6-boxer engines. The air-cooled engine is regarded as the “classic” and was in production until 1998, when the last air-cooled car was the Sport 993 Turbo. This was a limited run of 183 cars.

The current range features 25 different model options for the 911. These include the Carrera (Spanish for “Race”) and the Targa — which in 1965, was the world’s first cabriolet with a fixed safety roll bar. For ease of recognition, the 911 has been categorised based on body styles and engine performance.

Other designations are “4”, which is all-wheel drive, and “T”, Touring — which offers additional comfort. The “S” stands for sports performance. The “GTS” means Grand Sports Tourer, which encapsulates performance, enhanced handling, and comfort for everyday use. Turbocharged means the vehicle offers forced induction of air and fuel for enhanced performance from a comparable engine size.
