The Mercedes-Benz SL Class is a four-seat convertible, sold in AMG and AMG Performance guise, and it sits right at the sharp end of the Mercedes-Benz car range. It's a roadster for drivers who want open-air luxury and genuinely serious pace, rather than a soft-focus cruiser.

Two rear seats and a 4.70-4.71 m body make it more usable than a strict two-seater, though those back seats are best treated as occasional. Everything here is an AMG: there is no quiet, base-model SL.

The choice is simple. One body style, petrol or plug-in hybrid power, and two trims - AMG and AMG Performance.

About the Mercedes-Benz SL Class

The current SL Class is the seventh generation of a nameplate that dates back to the 1950s. That change of direction defines the car: stiffer, sportier, closer in spirit to a sports car than the softer SLs of the recent past.

Reviewers consistently praise the engines for their noise and shove, the cabin for its quality, and the chassis for staying composed at speed. The common criticism is the car's weight, so pack light.

Practical points that matter on a lease: four seats, adaptive suspension on every version, and a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz SL Class?

Because the SL Class is expensive to own outright and moves quickly as a model line, leasing lets you drive one for a fixed monthly rental over an agreed term without taking on its future value. The standard specification is also strong enough that you rarely need a long options list.

Every version gets heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, electric seat memory, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control and ambient lighting.

Safety and driver assistance are well covered too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking. Which SL Class powertrain is right for me?

There are two: petrol, or a plug-in hybrid that uses electricity for performance rather than economy. Both drive through a nine-speed automatic gearbox - there's no manual SL.

Petrol

Petrol SLs run from 415 to 577 bhp, with rear- or all-wheel drive depending on the version, and 0-62 mph takes between 3.6 and 4.7 seconds. WLTP economy is 21.1-31.4 mpg across the range. No charging, no cables - just fuel it and drive it.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs a 4.0-litre V8 with a 13 kWh battery for 805 bhp, 1,170 Nm and 2.9 seconds to 62 mph, through all-wheel drive. It charges at up to 4 kW, taking around 3.7 hours from flat on a 3.7 kW home supply on the best version. Think extra performance first, not fuel saving.

AMG

AMG starts at 469 bhp with all-wheel drive, on 21-inch AMG Multi-spoke alloys. It brings MBUX augmented reality navigation, a nappa leather AMG Performance steering wheel, a driver monitoring camera, head-up display, ventilated front seats, adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering. Rear cross-traffic alert and active lane-change assist are options.

The AMG is currently available from £1,786.10 a month.

AMG Performance

AMG Performance is the 805 bhp plug-in hybrid, again all-wheel drive, distinguished outside by 21-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke alloys. Mechanically it's the fastest SL you can order; in terms of kit it mirrors the AMG rather than adding to it, so choose it for the powertrain, not the equipment list.

The AMG Performance is currently available from £3,360.54 a month.

Mercedes-Benz SL Class FAQs

Yes, the SL Class has four seats in a two-door convertible body. The rear pair are occasional seats rather than full-size ones, so treat them as space for children on short trips or for luggage when the boot is full.

It can be charged, but it doesn't have to be - the V8 runs regardless. The 13 kWh battery accepts up to 4 kW and takes about 3.7 hours from flat at 3.7 kW on the best version. Three years with unlimited mileage, which suits a car people either barely use or drive a long way. There's also a three-year paintwork guarantee and a 30-year anti-corrosion guarantee. The hybrid's battery is covered for six years or 62,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.

Services fall every 12,500 to 15,500 miles depending on the version and how it's driven. Worth knowing on a lease: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit, and 21-inch wheels with performance tyres aren't cheap to replace if you kerb one.

It should. The SL is 4.70-4.71 m long, 1.92 m wide (2.10 m with the mirrors out) and 1.35-1.36 m tall, with a turning circle of 12.4-13.1 m. Power-folding mirrors, a 360-degree camera and self-steering parking are standard, which helps in tight multi-storeys.
