The Mercedes SL Class is a stylish cabriolet with an excellent ride. It's also a surprisingly practical car that offers impressive levels of performance.
Drivers can get to enjoy a choice of four excellent engines for the Mercedes SL Class. They include a very good 3.0 litre V6 which produces 329bhp along with two V8s that produce 429bhp and 530bhp and an impressive V12 6.0 litre unit in the SL65 that will produce 621bhp; this engine offers supercar performance.
The light and efficient engines mean the new Mercedes SL Class is cheaper to run with the SL 500 having economy of 31 mpg and emissions of 212g/km thanks to its twin turbo 4.7 litre engine while the entry-level 3.0 litre V6 SL 400 with a twin turbo will return 38 mpg and has emissions of 178g/km; this model will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just over five seconds while the SL 500 will cover the same distance in 4.6 seconds.
For those who want to enjoy excellent levels of performance, the S63 will cover that distance in 4.2 seconds but has economy of 29mpg and for the S65 it's slightly less. The faster SL65 will do the distance in four seconds.
A lot of the excellent levels of handling is down to the aluminium body shell – the latest version of the SL Class is much lighter than its predecessors - so while the car is geared for supercar levels of performance, it is actually designed for comfort. For those who need to travel on long journeys, it's a relaxing and great car to drive. Indeed, drivers can opt for one of three suspension types to help boost its performance and comfort levels.
There's a lot of standard equipment fitted as standard and safety kit includes an automatic braking system should collision the imminent and lane change assist.
Essentially, the Mercedes SL Class is a two seater convertible which offers high levels of luxury and comfort and impressive handling too. For anybody who wants a cabriolet, the SL is an excellent choice.
