Engines and performance for the Mercedes GLS
There is just one diesel engine being offered - a 3.0 litre six-cylinder unit producing 330 hp and torque of 700 Nm. The torque is necessary for the size of the car and to deliver the impressive 0-62 mph sprint time of 6.3 seconds. The top speed is 148mpg with economy of 36mpg. The diesel unit is smooth and offers good performance with other engines being added to the line-up at some point.
Equipment and handling
Launched in 2019, the Mercedes GLS delivers an impressively large SUV that will meet every need. There's lots of space with two luxury heated rear seats complete with infotainment screens and USB charging points. The list of standard equipment is very long and includes everything most drivers will want. The better spec models are the AMG versions which offer items such as an automatic sliding panoramic sunroof, temperature-controlled cupholders and heated armrests. There's also, for the first time, a third row of seats and the GLS is large enough for these to cater for (fairly) tall adults and not just children. This third row also gets USB charging points and are heated. The new Mercedes GLS is slightly larger than its predecessor and the 4Matic system delivers grip and reassurance when taken off Tarmac - though there is a special package offering torque-on-demand, downhill speed control and low-range off-road gearing. The air suspension delivers comfort to smooth out bumpy roads and while the GLS is big, it is easy to drive around town - though you may have to plan ahead for car parking. Essentially, the Mercedes GLS is a big SUV that delivers a luxurious driving experience for everyone on board and for those wanting an incredibly plush and imposing car, then the GLS will tick every box.
