The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the biggest SUV Mercedes-Benz builds: a five-door, 5.21m luxury SUV seating 4 or 7 that the maker itself likes to call the S-Class of SUVs. It sits above the GLE at the top of the brand's SUV line-up, and in Maybach form it aims squarely at the super-luxury end of the market.

The choice here is refreshingly simple. One body style, petrol power only with all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic, and a trim list that runs from AMG Line and Business Class through the Maybach versions, with the 604bhp Night Edition as the performance option.

If you want three usable rows and don't mind a car that fills a UK parking space, the GLS makes a strong case. If you mostly travel in the back, the four-seat Maybach cabin is a different proposition altogether.

About the Mercedes-Benz GLS

The GLS is a full-size luxury SUV built around space, quiet and long-distance comfort. Depending on the version you choose it seats 4 or 7, with a boot of 355 to 520 litres behind the rearmost seats and 2,400 litres with the rear seats folded.

Reviewers consistently praise the ride on its standard air suspension, the hush at motorway speed and the genuinely adult-sized third row; the common criticism is sheer size, plus a few cabin materials that don't quite match the price. Which GLS powertrain is right for me?

There's one answer: petrol. Every GLS on sale uses a petrol engine with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, so there's no plug to worry about and no electric-only range to plan around.

Petrol

Power runs from 376 to 604bhp, with 500 to 850Nm of torque, 0-62mph in 4.2 to 6.1 seconds and a nine-speed automatic. Official economy is 20.3 to 26.7mpg with CO2 of 241 to 315g/km, so this is a car for people who value comfort and towing ability over running costs.

AMG Line

The entry version, with 376bhp, all-wheel drive, 22-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloy wheels and leather upholstery. It brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic glass sunroof, a driver monitoring camera, front wireless charging and the keyless go comfort package, plus adaptive suspension and a rear-view camera. The AMG Line is currently available from £1,765.14 a month.

Business Class

Also 376bhp, on 23-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys with leather upholstery. It adds a heated steering wheel, wireless charging for rear passengers and a front passenger seat that can be moved electrically from the back row - useful if you carry people rather than luggage. The Business Class is currently available from £1,935.78 a month. Against the AMG Line, that is currently £170.64/mo more expensive.

Maybach

A step into Mercedes-Benz's luxury sub-brand: 550bhp, 22-inch Maybach Multi Spoke alloys, leather upholstery and adaptive suspension. Kit here includes a wood and leather multifunction steering wheel, a towing pack and Speedtronic cruise control. The Maybach is currently available from £2,875.18 a month. Against the Night Edition, that is currently £299.87/mo more expensive.

Maybach First Class

Mechanically the same 550bhp car on 22-inch Maybach Multi Spoke wheels with leather upholstery. The difference is presentation rather than added equipment, so choose it for how it looks and feels rather than for a longer spec sheet. The Maybach First Class is currently available from £2,947.19 a month. Against the Maybach, that is currently £72.01/mo more expensive.

Maybach Night Series

Again 550bhp and all-wheel drive, this time on 23-inch Maybach Multi Spoke alloys, and the cabin moves up to exclusive Nappa leather upholstery. If the interior is the reason you're buying a Maybach, this is where the material quality steps on. The Maybach Night Series is currently available from £3,362.42 a month. Against the Maybach First Class, that is currently £415.24/mo more expensive.

Maybach First Class Night Series

The 550bhp Maybach on 23-inch Maybach Multi Spoke wheels, combining the First Class and Night Series treatments. It's a look, not a longer equipment list. The Maybach First Class Night Series is currently available from £3,432.65 a month. Against the Maybach Night Series, that is currently £70.22/mo more expensive.

Night Edition

The quickest version, with 604bhp, 23-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys and paddle shifters for the nine-speed automatic. Inside, the upper and lower dashboard sections are trimmed in Nappa leather. It's the one to pick if you'd rather drive the GLS than be driven in it. The Night Edition is currently available from £2,575.31 a month.
