The Mercedes-Benz CLE is a four-seat, two-door Mercedes built for comfortable long journeys rather than track days. It comes as a coupe or a convertible, it's about 4.87 metres long, and every version drives through an automatic gearbox.
It's the two-door in the middle of the Mercedes-Benz range, and it does a job almost nobody else bothers with now: a proper four-seat coupe and cabriolet on the same set of underpinnings. Reviewers consistently describe it as quiet, smooth and easy-going, with a cabin that feels expensive.
The choice is straightforward. Two body styles, three powertrains - Petrol, Diesel and Plug-in hybrid - and trims that run AMG Line, Premier Edition and the 443 bhp AMG.

The current CLE, on sale in this form since 2024, is Mercedes-Benz's single two-door for buyers who want style without moving into supercar money. Four seats, a boot of 290 to 420 litres depending on the version, and a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Road testers praise the ride and the refinement more than the cornering: it's a car that prefers a long motorway run to a twisty B-road, and it's better for it. Criticism tends to land on the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls and the amount of function buried in the central screen.
Safety is strong. The CLE holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, with 93% for adult occupant protection and 83% for safety assist, and it'll tow up to 1,800 kg braked - unusual in a coupe.
Two shapes, same car underneath. The Coupe has the fixed roof and the wider boot range; the Convertible swaps that for a folding fabric roof and a boot that changes less between versions. Both seat four and measure about 4.87 m long.
The fixed-roof version, with a boot of 290 to 420 litres seats up depending on the powertrain. The CLE range offers the full choice of engines, from Petrol to Plug-in hybrid.
A folding roof, four seats and a boot of 375 to 385 litres seats up - decent for a drop-top. Height rises fractionally, to 1.42-1.44 m, and kerb weight starts higher. Browse the CLE Convertible if roof-down driving is the point.
Because the standard specification is unusually complete for a car in this class, which means fewer decisions and fewer options to argue about when you order. Every CLE, whatever the trim, gets kit that costs extra elsewhere.
That list includes heated front sports seats, electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control and ambient lighting.
Driver assistance is equally thorough as standard: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking. Servicing falls every 12,000 to 15,500 miles, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare.
Three choices: Petrol for the widest spread of power, Diesel for long-distance economy, and the Plug-in hybrid if you can charge regularly. All use a 9-speed automatic.
Power runs from 201 bhp to 443 bhp, with rear- or all-wheel drive available and 0-62 mph anywhere between 7.9 and 4.2 seconds. WLTP economy spans 29.4-43.5 mpg and CO2 148-219 g/km, so pick your version with your mileage in mind.
The 2-litre, 194 bhp diesel is rear-wheel drive and quotes 56.5-60.1 mpg with CO2 of 124-130 g/km. With 440 Nm of torque it pulls easily at motorway speeds. If you cover big annual mileages, this is the sensible one; short urban trips suit it less.
A 2-litre turbo with a 25.4 kWh battery (19.5 kWh usable) and 309 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds. It charges at up to 11 kW, taking around two hours from 10-100% on the best version. Boot space drops to 290 litres. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover how charging fits around a lease.

AMG Line and Premier Edition are the everyday trims, then there's the AMG performance version. All three use leather upholstery and share the long standard-equipment list, so the differences are wheels, cabin finish and driver-assistance extras.
The starting point, on 18-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloy wheels with sports suspension, heated front seats, ARTICO manmade leather in nappa look on the instrument panel and beltlines, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a parking package with reversing camera. The entry version has 201 bhp and rear-wheel drive. The AMG Line is currently available from £647.22 a month.
Adds 20-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys in high-sheen black, a panoramic sliding sunroof, nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and MBUX augmented reality navigation, plus a head-up display, 360-degree camera, massaging and ventilated front seats. Adaptive cruise control and active lane-change assist are available as options. The Premier Edition is currently available from £817.51 a month. Against the AMG Line, that is currently £170.29/mo more expensive.
The performance CLE: 443 bhp of petrol power, all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering on 20-inch AMG Y Spoke alloys. Inside it gains ARTICO leather on the dashboard with contrast stitching, four-way lumbar support and SPEEDTRONIC cruise control with variable speed limiter. The AMG is currently available from £1,129.31 a month. Against the Premier Edition, that is currently £311.80/mo more expensive.
