The Citroën C4 is a five-door family hatchback built around comfort rather than speed, with soft, long-travel suspension, deeply padded front seats and a raised, slightly crossover-ish stance that sets it apart from the usual C-segment crowd.

It sits in the middle of Citroën's car range: bigger and more grown-up than the C3, smaller and simpler than the C5 Aircross. Five seats, a 380-litre boot and a length of about 4.36 metres make it a straightforward size for UK roads and car parks.

The choice is refreshingly simple. One body style, two powertrains - a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or a fully electric version - and two trims, Plus and Collection.

About the Citroën C4

The current C4 is the third generation of the name, on sale in this form since 2024. It's a family hatchback that leads with ride comfort, quietness and distinctive styling instead of sporty handling.

Reviewers consistently praise the same two things: the cushioned ride, which takes the sting out of broken town roads and speed bumps better than most cars at this size, and the front seats, which are thickly padded and suit long journeys. The same testers are equally consistent that it leans in corners and isn't the car to pick if you want sharp steering.

Practically, it's honest rather than cavernous - 380 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, 1,250 litres folded, five seats and up to 1,200 kg of braked towing on the petrol. Citroën covers it with a 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty.

Why lease a Citroën C4?

Because every C4 arrives well equipped, whichever version you choose. Built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, adaptive suspension and LED headlights are standard right across the range.

Safety and driver assistance follow the same pattern: autonomous emergency braking, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera on every version, with lane-keep assist on Plus and blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam added on Collection.

Usefully for everyday life, the driver's seat has height adjustment and adjustable lumbar support, and the turning circle is a tidy 10.9 m. Servicing falls every 24 months or 16,000 miles, which keeps garage visits infrequent on a typical lease. Worth knowing before you order: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit.

Which C4 powertrain is right for me?

There are two: a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and a fully electric version. Both are automatic and front-wheel drive, so the real question is whether you can charge at home or at work, and how far you usually drive.

Petrol: 1.2-litre turbo

A three-cylinder turbo petrol with 128-143 bhp, automatic only, driving the front wheels. WLTP economy runs from 44.9 to 62.1 mpg depending on version, 0-62 mph takes 8.0-9.4 seconds, and it can tow up to 1,200 kg braked. The sensible pick if charging isn't practical.

Electric

A 50-54 kWh battery giving 134-154 bhp and a WLTP electric range of 219 miles, rising to up to 257 miles on the best version. Rapid charging peaks at up to 100 kW, with 20-80% possible in around 30 minutes on the best version. It suits home chargers and predictable commutes. Which C4 trim should I choose?

Two trims: Plus and Collection. Both ride on 18-inch "Amber" alloy wheels, so the difference is in cabin materials, comfort kit and driver assistance rather than looks.

Plus

Plus covers the essentials properly: wireless or wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a grained leather steering wheel with two command blocks, rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, a colour head-up display, and a height-adjustable driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support. Cloth and leather upholstery and lane-keep assist come as standard, with a heat pump available as an option.

The Plus is currently available from £340.10 a month.

Collection

Collection adds a deluxe heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control with Stop and Go, keyless entry and start, and electric lumbar adjustment for the front seats. Also standard: Alcantara and leather trim, heated and massaging front seats, front parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and a heat pump. A 360-degree camera and wireless phone charging are optional.

The Collection is currently available from £352.87 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £12.77/mo more expensive.
