The BMW M5 Estate pairs a 717 bhp plug-in hybrid V8 with a 500-litre boot, five seats and all-wheel drive. This page explains what the M5 Estate is like to live with, how it compares with the Saloon, and what the single M5 trim gives you.
The BMW M5 Estate is a five-seat, five-door performance estate with a 717 bhp plug-in hybrid V8, all-wheel drive and a 500-litre boot. It's the M car for someone who wants supercar pace and a dog guard in the same vehicle.
It sits at the top of BMW's saloon and estate line-up, above the regular 5 Series Touring and alongside the M5 Saloon. This is the current eighth-generation M5, on sale in this form since 2024.
The choice here is simple: one body style on this page, one powertrain, one trim called M5, and an Ultimate Pack if you want the extra kit. Most of your decisions are about colour, wheels and options rather than versions.

The M5 Estate is a full-size fast estate: 5.10 m long, 2,480 kg at the kerb, five seats, a 500-litre boot that grows to 1,630 litres with the rear seats folded, and a 3-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
M5 estates are rare things - BMW has only built a handful across the model's history, which is part of the appeal. Reviewers consistently praise the pace, the traction from all-wheel drive and the way the adaptive suspension disguises the weight on a fast road.
The criticisms are consistent too. Road testers point out that it's heavy, that the ride stays firm over poor British surfaces, and that the drive-mode menus take some learning. Nobody argues about the performance, or the fact it will tow up to 2,000 kg braked.
The Estate is the more useful of the two and gives up almost nothing. It carries 500 litres behind the rear seats against 466 litres in the BMW M5 Saloon, adds a tailgate and a fifth door, and takes 1,630 litres with the seats down.
Both are 5.10 m long and both tow 2,000 kg braked, 750 kg unbraked. The Estate stands 1.52 m tall against 1.51 m, weighs 2,480 kg against 2,440 kg, and takes 100 kg on the roof rather than 75 kg - so roof boxes and bike carriers are less of a compromise.
You can see both bodies together on the BMW M5 range page, or browse the wider BMW leasing range.
Because the equipment list is already complete and the contract keeps a very fast, very expensive car on a fixed monthly cost for a fixed term. Every M5 Estate comes fully loaded, so there's little pressure to spend on options.
Standard across the range: a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats and heated steering wheel, electric memory seats, hands-free tailgate, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four-zone climate control and adaptive suspension.
On safety and assistance you get autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beam and LED headlights as standard. The spare is a tyre repair kit, and insurance group 49 tells you what to expect when you ring your broker.
There's only one, so the real question is whether a plug-in hybrid suits how you drive. It rewards drivers who can charge at home and do a lot of short local journeys, and it works perfectly well if you can't.
A 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 with a 22.1 kWh battery (18.6 kWh usable), 717 bhp, 1,000 Nm, an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. 0-62 mph takes 3.6 seconds; top speed is 155 mph, or up to 190 mph depending on version.
Charging peaks at 11 kW, giving 0-100% in 2.3 hours on the best version with a suitable home or workplace charger. You don't have to plug in - the car will run as a hybrid regardless - but if you never charge it, you'll never see its low-emission side. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover the practicalities.

There's one trim, called M5, and it's comprehensively equipped - your choices are the option packs and the paint, not the specification level.
The single version: 717 bhp, all-wheel drive, 21-inch Double Spoke Style 951m alloy wheels and leather upholstery. It adds adaptive LED headlights, multifunction controls on the leather steering wheel, a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system, an interior camera, a powered tailgate, a rear-view camera and a parking assistant plus pack with anti-theft travel recorder.
Options worth knowing about on this trim include adaptive cruise control, a fixed panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition and a fixed towbar. The Ultimate Pack bundles a fixed panoramic sunroof with electric sunblind, parking assistant professional and the driving assistant professional pack with active cruise control.
Paint runs to ten colours across the range: Alpine white, Black sapphire, Brooklyn grey, Carbon black, Fire red, Frozen Deep Grey, Isle of Man green, Marina Bay blue, Sophisto grey and Storm bay. Check availability on the individual deal before you order - options and colours affect lead times more than anything else on a car like this. Our guide to choosing your car is a sensible read first.
