With its incredible levels of performance, the M5 must surely be one of the best handling executive saloons available today and it is surely one of the fastest. In addition to its speed, the M5 is also extremely comfortable and comes with an interior that is best described as luxurious. For many people, the BMW carrying the M badge is a sign that it will provide unrivalled performance. And they would be right too.
It should be noted that the engines being used in the M5 have been derived from Formula One technology and, as such, the turbocharged V8 engine is extremely powerful. This means that the 4.4 litre twin turbocharged engine for the M5 is not the most frugal and it will return around 29 mpg on the combined cycle and have CO2 emissions of 232g/km. The car's top speed is 190 mph. To help the car deal with the power and speed, the M5 suspension is electronically controlled and the driver can adapt it easily from the steering wheel mounted controls to tune it for the environment. Switch the setting to its softest and the car becomes a smooth cruiser, dealing with potholes and rough roads effectively. Thankfully, there's also a lot of grip between tyre and road to help improve performance.
It's also very quiet car to drive, the sound insulation is excellent thanks to the double-glazed windows and there's little in the way of road noise even when cruising at high speed. The steering is light and has good feedback to provide a fun and great drive while the gearbox is responsive. Despite the fact that this is a sports car aimed at drivers the M5 is still a practical vehicle and has a decent sized boot at 520 litres and lots of cubbyholes around the cabin. There's also a whole range of standard equipment including rear parking sensors, climate control, alloy wheels and keyless entry.
Optional extras for the M5 include sports leather seats, a larger satnav and a heads-up display which will put the car’s important information onto the windscreen. It goes without saying that the M5 is also very safe car to drive having scored full marks in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests and safety equipment includes electronic stability control and airbags. Essentially, the M5 is a true driver's car and everything about it is focused entirely on delivering driver enjoyment with incredible levels of performance in a luxury package that is not only enjoyable but thrilling too.
