View dealThe BMW M4 is the hard-edged two-door at the top of BMW's 4 Series family: a 3-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine making 523 bhp and 650 Nm, driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. It seats four, and it is 4.80 m long.
It suits a driver who wants genuine performance-car pace without giving up a usable back seat, a proper boot and everyday comfort. Road testers consistently describe the current car as faster and far more secure in poor weather than earlier rear-drive M4s, if slightly less playful for it.
The choice is simple: coupe or convertible, one petrol engine, and one specification, M4 Competition M, with an Ult Pk Pack available as an add-on.

The M4 is BMW M's compact performance coupe, sold alongside the M3 saloon and derived from the 4 Series. This is the second-generation car, on sale in this form since 2021, and it is covered by BMW's three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise the engine's flexibility and noise, the huge traction of the all-wheel-drive system and the sheer breadth of adjustment available through the driving modes. The common criticisms are the size of the kidney grilles, the weight, and a ride that stays firm even in its softest setting.
Practicality is better than the shape suggests: four seats, and a boot of up to 440 litres in the coupe with the rear seats up. Service intervals are every 24 months or 15,000 miles, and every car carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.
Two shapes are on sale, both two-door and both four-seat. The coupe is the sharper driver's car with the bigger boot; the convertible trades some of that rigidity and load space for open-air driving. Dimensions are otherwise shared.
The fixed-roof car carries a 440-litre boot with the rear seats up and weighs 1,775 kg. It's the stiffer of the two and the one keen drivers tend to pick. Browse the M4 Coupe.
The drop-top gives up some boot space, at 385 litres with the seats up, and weighs 1,925 kg. In return you get the straight-six unfiltered by a roof. See the M4 Convertible.
Because the M4 arrives well equipped, and leasing keeps you in a current car under manufacturer warranty for the whole term. Every version gets adaptive and sports suspension, a head-up display, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Heated front sports seats, electric seat memory, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control and ambient lighting are standard, as are LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and power-folding mirrors. On the parking and assistance side you get front and rear sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking.
One practical point worth raising before you order: the M4 sits in insurance group 43 to 45 depending on version, so it's worth getting a quote early. Our guide to running a lease car covers what a funder expects on insurance and servicing.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether it fits your driving. It's a petrol car with no plug and no charging to think about, and it's automatic only.
A 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo petrol with 523 bhp and 650 Nm, an eight-speed gearbox and paddle shifters. It covers 0-62 mph in 3.5 to 3.7 seconds depending on version, tops out at 155 mph, and returns 26.9 to 27.7 mpg on the WLTP test with CO2 of 232 to 239 g/km. All-wheel drive makes that performance usable year-round.
