The BMW M3 is the hard-edged version of BMW's compact executive car: a five-seat saloon or estate with a 523 bhp 3-litre turbo petrol engine, an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. It's a genuine supercar-pace machine that still works on a Tuesday morning school run.

It sits near the top of BMW's M range, above the everyday 3 Series and below the larger M5. If you want the performance without giving up four doors, back seats and a real boot, this is the car that argument usually ends with.

About the BMW M3

The M3 has been BMW's fast 3 Series since the 1980s, and the current M3, on sale in this form since 2022, is the quickest and most usable yet. It seats five and carries 480 to 500 litres in the boot depending on body style.

Reviewers consistently praise the chassis: enormous grip and superb body control. The common criticism is ride firmness and road noise, so it's worth a long test drive before you commit.

Every version comes with BMW's three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, which suits high-mileage drivers who'd otherwise watch a mileage cap tick down.

M3 body styles

Two shapes, identical mechanically. Both are 4.80 m long on the same 2.86 m wheelbase, both seat five, and both use the same engine and all-wheel drive. The difference is the back half of the car, and how much you need to put in it.

Saloon

The four-door M3 carries 480 litres with the rear seats up and is the lighter of the two at 1,780 kg. Slightly more discreet, and the traditional shape for the badge.

Estate

The five-door estate takes 500 litres seats up and 1,510 litres folded, with a proper square opening for dogs, buggies or bikes. It weighs 1,865 kg, so you trade a little sharpness for real load space.

On the parking and safety side you get front and rear sensors, a rear-view camera, self-steering parking assist, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. There's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare, and roof load is 75 kg if you're fitting a rack.

Which M3 powertrain is right for me?

There's only one, so the decision is really whether it suits you: a petrol six with all-wheel drive, no plug, no charging and no electric range. Fuel stops are part of the deal.

Petrol: 3-litre turbo, 523 bhp, automatic, all-wheel drive

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder makes 523 bhp and 650 Nm through an eight-speed automatic, covering 0-62 mph in 3.5 to 3.6 seconds, with a 155 mph top speed. Official economy is 26.6 to 27.4 mpg and CO2 is 233 to 241 g/km, so company car drivers should check their tax position first.

Which M3 trim should I choose?

One trim covers the whole UK range, M3 Competition M, so the real choices are body style, paint and whether you add the option pack. Insurance sits in group 42 to 43, worth quoting before you order.

M3 Competition M

This is the 523 bhp all-wheel-drive car on 20-inch "Double Spoke - 826m" alloys with leather upholstery and sports seats. Standard kit includes smartphone integration, heated front seats, a Harman Kardon surround sound system, a wireless charging tray and ambient lighting front and rear, plus automatic parking assist.

The M3 Competition M is currently available from £1,207.36 a month.

Factory options include a 360-degree camera, electric sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, keyless entry and start, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keep assist. The Ult Pk Pack bundles extras on top. Twenty-five paint colours are offered across the range, from Alpine white and Black sapphire to Dravit grey, Aventurine red and Frozen Portimao blue.
