View dealThe BMW 5 Series Estate is the load-carrying version of BMW's executive saloon: five seats, a 570-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,700 litres with them folded, and a driving experience that reviewers consistently rate as the best in the big-estate class.
It sits above the 3 Series in BMW's line-up and below the 7 Series, and it is aimed at drivers who want the room of a large SUV without the height or the bulk - families, dog owners, high-mileage business drivers and anyone who tows.
The choice here is simple. One body style, two powertrains (a 2-litre turbo petrol or a plug-in hybrid), and two trims: M Sport and M Sport Pro.

This is the eighth-generation 5 Series, on sale in this form since 2024, and the estate takes the saloon's chassis and adds a tailgate and a longer roof. Road testers repeatedly make the same point: the extra practicality costs you almost nothing in the way it drives.
What they praise is the ride and motorway refinement, the quality of the cabin and the twin-screen dashboard. The common criticism is that some functions are buried in the touchscreen menus.
Practically, it's 5.06 m long, seats five, and carries 570 litres behind the rear seats. Every version comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty, and the 5 Series holds a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
The estate is the one to have if you carry things; the saloon is the one to have if you don't. Both are 5.06 m long with five seats, so the difference is at the back rather than in footprint.
The estate gives you 570 litres behind the rear seats against 520 litres in the 5 Series Saloon, plus 1,700 litres with the seats folded, and a 100 kg roof load rather than 75 kg. Both tow 1,800-2,000 kg braked depending on version. The estate is a little heavier, at 1,775-2,210 kg.

Because the standard specification is high across both trims, which matters on a lease: you're not paying monthly for options you could have had included. Every version gets a 360-degree camera, heated front seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation and a digital instrument cluster.
The driver-assistance kit is thorough too - autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking are all standard. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 89% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupants.
A note from the leasing side: the 5 Series Estate carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel, so it's worth checking your breakdown cover before you order.
There are two: a turbocharged petrol and a plug-in hybrid. Both use an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and neither is offered with a manual.
The 2-litre turbo petrol produces 205 bhp and 330 Nm, drives the rear wheels, and covers 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds. WLTP economy is 42.8-46.3 mpg with CO2 of 140-141 g/km, and it tows 2,000 kg braked. No charging, no plug, no planning - the straightforward choice.
The plug-in hybrid pairs a petrol engine with a 22.1 kWh battery (19.0-19.4 kWh usable) and covers 295-482 bhp depending on version, with rear- or all-wheel drive. Charging is AC only at up to 11 kW, which takes 2.3 hours from 0-100% on the best version. It suits company car drivers who can plug in at home.

There are two, and the gap between them is narrow: M Sport and M Sport Pro.
M Sport is the entry trim and it's generously equipped: 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 935 M" alloys, leather and artificial leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, a wireless charging tray, an ambient lighting pack, sports suspension, front sports seats, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control and lane-keep assist. A head-up display, panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel, privacy glass, fixed towbar and adaptive suspension are all available as options.
M Sport Pro keeps the same mechanical starting point - 205 bhp, rear-wheel drive - and moves up to 20-inch "Star Spoke Style 938 M" alloys, with launch control added. The same option list applies, so choose it if you want the bigger wheels and the sharper look rather than a longer kit list.
