About the Audi RS5 Saloon

It's a four-door, five-seat saloon with a 331-litre boot and a 2.90 m wheelbase.

Reviewers repeatedly praise the way it hides its mass, and are equally consistent about the trade-offs: it's a big, heavy machine, with only a 46-litre fuel tank.

Every version gets matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, massaging and ventilated front seats, and four-zone climate control as standard. The battery is covered by an 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.

RS5 Saloon or RS5 Estate?

The Saloon is the sleeker of the two and the Estate is the more practical, but the gap is narrower than you'd expect. Both seat five, both measure 4.90 m long on a 2.90 m wheelbase, and both tow 1,900 kg braked.

The Saloon carries 331 litres with the rear seats up and 1,170 litres folded. The Audi RS5 Estate adds five doors, 361 litres seats-up and 1,302 litres folded, and weighs 2,370 kg against the Saloon's 2,355 kg. Which RS5 Saloon powertrain is right for me?

There's only one, so the decision is really whether it suits your driving. The RS5 Saloon is sold solely as a plug-in hybrid with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, so there's no petrol-only or diesel alternative to weigh up.

Plug-in hybrid: 2.9-litre turbo, 25.9 kWh battery, 630 bhp, automatic, all-wheel drive

A 2.9-litre six-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor through an 8-speed automatic, producing 630 bhp and 825 Nm. It'll reach 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph, rising to 177 mph on some versions.

The 25.9 kWh battery (20.7 kWh usable) charges at up to 11 kW, and the best version takes 2.5 hours from 0-100% on an 11 kW home or AC supply. You can drive it without ever plugging in, but you'll want a home charger to get the benefit.

Which RS5 Saloon trim should I choose?

All four trims share the same 630 bhp plug-in hybrid drivetrain and all-wheel drive, so this is a decision about wheels, cabin materials and parking and camera technology, not about performance.

RS5 entry model

The starting point, and no one would call it sparse. It rides on 20-inch "5 Y Spoke" alloys with pearl nappa leather upholstery, honeycomb stitching and an RS embossed logo, a 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen with MMI navigation plus, heated front seats, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound and camera-based traffic sign recognition. A fixed panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar are available as options.

Carbon Black

Carbon Black is about appearance rather than extra kit. It moves up to 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" alloys, keeps the leather upholstery, and carries the same option list of a fixed panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar.

Launch Edition

Launch Edition is the technology step. Over Carbon Black it adds the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with headrest speakers, a 3D and 360-degree surround view camera, and park assist pro with remote functionality, on the same 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" wheels.

Performance Vorsprung

The fully loaded one. It adds a fixed panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency, pearl nappa leather and dinamica upholstery with honeycomb stitching, heated rear seats, and park assist pro with remote functionality operated from your smartphone. A retractable towbar stays optional.

It doesn't have to be charged to drive, because the 2.9-litre petrol engine can do the work alone. But you'll only see the benefit of the 25.9 kWh battery if you plug in, and with a 46-litre fuel tank, regular charging makes a real difference.

The fastest charging rate is 11 kW, and the best version charges from 0-100% in about 2.5 hours on an 11 kW home or AC supply. That makes an 11 kW home or workplace charger worth arranging before delivery.

Yes. It's rated at 1,900 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked. A retractable towbar is a factory option on the RS5 entry model, Carbon Black and Performance Vorsprung, so it needs specifying at order - it isn't something to add later on a leased car.

Audi covers the drive battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of its capacity over that period. On a typical lease term you'd hand the car back long before that cover runs out.

The Tech Pack bundles the fixed panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency, the Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with headrest speakers, the 3D and 360-degree surround view camera and park assist pro with remote functionality. It's an add-on to a trim, not a trim in itself, so availability depends on the individual deal.
