Reviewers repeatedly praise the way it hides its mass, and are equally consistent about the trade-offs: it's a big, heavy machine, with only a 46-litre fuel tank.

Which RS5 Saloon powertrain is right for me?

There's only one, so the decision is really whether it suits your driving. The RS5 Saloon is sold solely as a plug-in hybrid with an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, so there's no petrol-only or diesel alternative to weigh up.

Plug-in hybrid: 2.9-litre turbo, 25.9 kWh battery, 630 bhp, automatic, all-wheel drive

A 2.9-litre six-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor through an 8-speed automatic, producing 630 bhp and 825 Nm. It'll reach 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph, rising to 177 mph on some versions.

The 25.9 kWh battery (20.7 kWh usable) charges at up to 11 kW, and the best version takes 2.5 hours from 0-100% on an 11 kW home or AC supply. You can drive it without ever plugging in, but you'll want a home charger to get the benefit.

Which RS5 Saloon trim should I choose?

All four trims share the same 630 bhp plug-in hybrid drivetrain and all-wheel drive, so this is a decision about wheels, cabin materials and parking and camera technology, not about performance.

RS5 entry model

The starting point, and no one would call it sparse. It rides on 20-inch "5 Y Spoke" alloys with pearl nappa leather upholstery, honeycomb stitching and an RS embossed logo, a 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen with MMI navigation plus, heated front seats, Bang & Olufsen 3D sound and camera-based traffic sign recognition. A fixed panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar are available as options.

Carbon Black

Carbon Black is about appearance rather than extra kit. It moves up to 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" alloys, keeps the leather upholstery, and carries the same option list of a fixed panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar.

Launch Edition

Launch Edition is the technology step. Over Carbon Black it adds the Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with headrest speakers, a 3D and 360-degree surround view camera, and park assist pro with remote functionality, on the same 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" wheels.

Performance Vorsprung

The fully loaded one. It adds a fixed panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency, pearl nappa leather and dinamica upholstery with honeycomb stitching, heated rear seats, and park assist pro with remote functionality operated from your smartphone. A retractable towbar stays optional.
