The Audi RS5 is the fast, plug-in hybrid version of the A5, sold as a saloon or an estate. It pairs a 2.9-litre turbo petrol engine with a 25.9 kWh battery for 630 bhp, all-wheel drive and 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds.
It suits a driver who wants genuine super-saloon pace but still has to do the school run, the motorway slog and the occasional silent crawl through a low-emission zone. Five seats, four doors or five, and a boot that's usable rather than generous.
The choice is simple enough: saloon or estate body, one plug-in hybrid powertrain, and four trims - RS5 entry model, Carbon Black, Launch Edition and Performance Vorsprung.

The RS5 sits at the top of the A5 family and is Audi Sport's first plug-in hybrid. It's the current RS5: 4.90 m long, five seats, and a 331-litre boot in the saloon or 361 litres in the estate, both with the rear seats up.
Reviewers consistently make two points. The car is heavy - road testers rarely let that go - yet they also agree that it disguises the mass far better than the numbers suggest, and that it rides and cruises more comfortably than some rivals.
The other consistent praise is breadth. It will run on electric power around town and then, with the V6 awake, behave like a proper RS car. The drive battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
Two shapes, same mechanical package. Both are 4.90 m long on a 2.90 m wheelbase, both seat five, and both tow up to 1,900 kg braked. The difference is the tailgate, the boot and about 15 kg of kerb weight.
The four-door RS5 Saloon is the sleeker of the two, with 331 litres behind the rear seats and 1,170 litres folded. Kerb weight is 2,355 kg. Reviewers rate its looks highly.
The RS5 Estate adds a fifth door and a squarer load bay: 361 litres seats up, 1,302 litres folded. It weighs 2,370 kg. If you carry dogs, bikes or flat-packed anything, this is the one.
Because every RS5 arrives loaded, and leasing keeps a complex, fast-moving performance hybrid on a fixed monthly cost for a fixed term. You choose the term and mileage; the car goes back at the end.
Standard across the range: adaptive cruise control, head-up display, matrix LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, massaging, ventilated and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Driver assistance is equally thorough - autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors and self-steering parking are fitted to every version. Insurance sits in group 48-50, so get a quote before you order.
One practical note from our team: the RS5 carries a tyre repair kit rather than a spare, and the 46-litre fuel tank is small for the class. Worth knowing if you cover long distances.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether a plug-in hybrid fits your life. If you can charge at home or at work, it will make sense. If you can't, you're carrying a battery you never use.
A 2.9-litre turbo petrol engine and a 25.9 kWh battery (20.7 kWh usable) combine for 630 bhp and 825 Nm, through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Charging peaks at 11 kW, and the best version takes 2.5 hours from 0-100% at that rate. Top speed is 155-177 mph depending on version.
| Plug-in hybrid | |
|---|---|
| Boot | 331–361 litres |
| Power | 630 bhp |
| Seats | 5 |
| Battery | 25.9 kWh |
| 0–62 mph | 3.6 s |
| Braked towing | 1900 kg |
All four trims share the same 630 bhp powertrain and all-wheel drive, so this is about wheels, trim materials, cameras and roof - not speed.
The starting point, and no poor relation. It brings MMI navigation plus with a 14.5-inch OLED touchscreen, pearl nappa leather with honeycomb stitching and an RS embossed logo, heated front seats, a Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System and camera-based traffic sign recognition, on 20-inch "5 Y Spoke" alloys. A fixed panoramic glass roof and a retractable towbar are available as options.
Carbon Black is about appearance rather than extra kit: the same equipment as the entry car, but on 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" alloys, with the panoramic roof and retractable towbar still available as options. The Carbon Black is currently available from £1,289.36 a month.
Launch Edition keeps the 21-inch "6 Twin Spoke" wheels and adds the Bang and Olufsen 3D Premium Sound System with integrated headrest speakers, a 3D and 360 degree display surround view camera, and park assist pro with remote functionality. The Launch Edition is currently available from £1,363.49 a month. Against the Carbon Black, that is currently £74.12/mo more expensive.
The fullest specification: a fixed panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency, pearl nappa leather and dinamica with honeycomb stitching and an RS embossed logo, heated rear seats, and park assist pro with remote functionality using your smartphone. A retractable towbar remains an option. The Performance Vorsprung is currently available from £1,472.72 a month. Against the Launch Edition, that is currently £109.24/mo more expensive.
If you like the look of the entry car but want the roof, the sound system with headrest speakers, the surround-view camera and remote park assist, the optional Tech Pack bundles exactly those four items onto a trim rather than making you move up. Worth asking about before you commit to a higher trim.
If you're weighing the RS5 against something more comfort-led in a similar footprint, the Mercedes-Benz E Class covers a lot of the same ground as a saloon or estate. You can also see the wider Audi leasing range if you want to compare within the brand.
