The Volvo XC90 is a large seven-seat SUV built around family life rather than showmanship. It sits at the top of Volvo's combustion-engined range, below the brand's electric flagship, and comes as an SUV only, with a choice of two powertrains and five trims.

The choice is straightforward. You pick a 2-litre turbo petrol or the plug-in hybrid, both automatic and all-wheel drive, then a trim from Core, Plus, Plus Pro, Ultra or Ultra Pro.

This is the facelifted second-generation car, on sale in this form since 2024. A small number of previous-shape petrol and plug-in hybrid versions may still be available while stocks last, so it's worth checking what the live deals actually list.

About the Volvo XC90

The XC90 is a 4.95 m seven-seater with a 2,400 kg braked towing limit and a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. Reviewers consistently describe it as calm, comfortable and unusually well judged for family use, even though the underlying car has been around a while.

What road testers keep returning to is the cabin: quiet, softly trimmed, and laid out so that all three rows feel like part of the same car rather than an afterthought. The third row is genuinely usable for children and shorter adults, though taller passengers won't want hours back there.

Boot space is 244 to 247 litres with all the seats up depending on the version, rising to between 1,941 and 1,950 litres with the rear seats folded. The seven-seat layout carries through across all versions, which suits families who need the extra flexibility.

Why lease a Volvo XC90?

Because the standard specification is unusually complete for a car of this size, which matters on a lease where you live with the spec you ordered. Every XC90 gets seven seats, all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a long list of safety kit.

That list includes autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and adaptive cruise control, plus matrix LED headlights. Four-zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, a hands-free tailgate, built-in navigation and a digital instrument cluster are fitted throughout too.

Practically, there are roof rails, a 100 kg roof load, a 71-litre fuel tank and an 11.9 m turning circle - large, but not unmanageable. If you're weighing up mileage, term and spec before ordering, our guide to choosing your car is a sensible starting point.

Which XC90 powertrain is right for me?

There are two: a 2-litre turbo petrol and a plug-in hybrid. Both are automatic and all-wheel drive, so the real question is whether you can plug in regularly at home or work.

Petrol

The 2-litre turbo petrol produces 247 bhp and 360 Nm, reaching 62 mph in 7.7 seconds. WLTP economy is 30.7 to 33.6 mpg with CO2 of 191 to 208 g/km, and the boot is 247 litres with the seats up. No charging, no routine, and insurance groups of 37 to 40.

Plug-in hybrid

The plug-in hybrid pairs the 2-litre turbo with an 18.8 kWh battery (14.7 kWh usable) for 401 to 449 bhp and 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds. Charging peaks at 12 kW, and the best version takes three hours from 0-100% at 11.5 kW. Boot space is 244 litres, insurance groups 42 to 43.

Honestly, it only makes sense if you'll plug it in. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover how home charging changes the sums.

Which XC90 trim should I choose?

Five trims are offered: Core, Plus, Plus Pro, Ultra and Ultra Pro. They differ mainly in wheels, upholstery and cabin comfort, since the safety and driver-assistance kit is shared across the range.

Core

Core is far from sparse: Google Automotive Services, wired Android Auto, front and rear park assist, and adaptive cruise control. It rides on 20-inch 5 Multi Spoke alloys with cloth upholstery and a powered tailgate, with heated rear seats available as an option. A 360-degree camera, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, privacy glass and a retractable towbar are all available as options.

The Core is currently available from £643.51 a month.

Plus

Plus adds a heated steering wheel and a 360-degree surround-view parking camera with side proximity sensors, plus a power passenger seat with memory. Air suspension is available as an option from this point, which can noticeably soften the ride. Privacy glass and the retractable towbar remain options.

The Plus is currently available from £537.24 a month. Against the Core, that is currently £106.27/mo cheaper. Best value

Plus Pro

Plus Pro swaps to 21-inch 5 Multispoke diamond-cut black alloys with summer tyres, and privacy glass becomes standard. The retractable towbar stays on the options list.

The Plus Pro is currently available from £684.77 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £147.53/mo more expensive.

Ultra

Ultra keeps the 21-inch wheels and adds a panoramic sunroof with sun curtain and Nappa soft leather upholstery. On a long-distance car, those two are the ones customers ask about most. A retractable towbar can still be specified.

The Ultra is currently available from £717.67 a month. Against the Plus Pro, that is currently £32.90/mo more expensive.

Ultra Pro

Ultra Pro moves to 22-inch 7 Double Spoke diamond-cut black alloys with summer tyres and adds front seat backrest massage. Bigger wheels look sharp but do firm things up, so try before you commit.

The Ultra Pro is currently available from £752.94 a month. Against the Ultra, that is currently £35.27/mo more expensive.

Volvo XC90 FAQs

Yes. Seven seats are standard, along with four-zone climate control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane-keep assist. Reviewers consistently rate its cabin comfort and third-row usability highly for the class, though taller adults will find row three tight on long journeys.

It will drive without being charged, but you lose the point of it. The 18.8 kWh battery (14.7 kWh usable) charges at up to 12 kW, and the best version takes three hours from 0-100% at 11.5 kW. Without regular charging you're moving a heavy SUV on petrol alone.

With all the seats up it's 244 to 247 litres depending on the version - the petrol gives 247 litres, the plug-in hybrid 244. Fold the rear seats and you get between 1,941 and 1,950 litres. The load area is square, with a low lip.

Yes. Braked towing is rated at 2,400 kg and unbraked at 750 kg, on both the petrol and the plug-in hybrid. A retractable towbar is a factory option across the trims, so if you plan to tow, specify it at order stage - it can't be added to the contract later.

Volvo covers the car for 3 years or 60,000 miles, with a 3-year paintwork guarantee and an 8-year anti-corrosion guarantee. The hybrid battery is warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity. Servicing is every 12 months or 18,000 miles.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time. Trim, powertrain, term, mileage and initial rental all move the monthly figure, and the cheapest version on any given week isn't always the entry trim. The live deals below show today's position.

Often, yes, on a like-for-like trim at the moment. A rental reflects the gap between the car's cost and its forecast value at the end of the term, plus interest, so a version expected to hold its value better can cost less per month despite a higher list price. That can change when pricing is refreshed.
