View dealThe Volvo ES90 is Volvo's large electric executive car: a five-seat, five-metre hatchback that sits a little higher than a conventional saloon and opens at the back like an estate. It's the sensible alternative for anyone who has had enough of big SUVs.
It suits long-distance drivers, company car drivers and families who want space and quiet rather than sharp handling. Reviewers consistently describe it as one of the quietest, calmest cars in its class, with outstanding front seats.
The choice is simple. One body, one electric powertrain family with a 92–106 kWh battery and rear- or all-wheel drive, and two trims: Plus and Ultra.

The ES90 is Volvo's flagship car rather than an SUV, and it takes over from the old S90 as the brand's big executive model. It's 5.00 m long with a 3.10 m wheelbase, seats five and carries 442 litres with the rear seats up.
Road testers praise the refinement above everything - almost no wind or tyre noise, a relaxed gait and a cabin they routinely call one of the most pleasant places to sit at this money. The common criticism is the touchscreen: mirror and steering column adjustment live in the menus, and some testers find that fiddly.
Every ES90 comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, with the battery covered for 8 years / 100,000 miles.
Because the standard specification is unusually complete for an executive car, which matters more on a lease than on a purchase: you're choosing from what's built, not from an options list you'll be paying for over three or four years.
Every version gets a head-up display, 360-degree camera, fixed panoramic glass roof, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, wireless charging, built-in navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four-zone climate control and a heat pump - the last of which helps efficiency in a British winter.
Safety kit is standard across the board too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic parking assist and front and rear sensors. Braked towing runs from 1,600 kg, up to 2,000 kg on the strongest versions, and boot space rises to 1,445 litres with the seats folded.
There's one answer here: the ES90 is electric only, so every version plugs in and none of them uses petrol or diesel. What changes across the range is battery size, power and whether drive goes to the rear wheels or all four.
Battery capacity runs from 92 kWh to 106 kWh, power from 328 bhp to 671 bhp, and WLTP range up to 426.3 miles on the best version. Every ES90 is automatic, with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive available. Rapid charging reaches 310–350 kW, so a 10-80% top-up takes 22 minutes at 350 kW on the best version.
At home, the strongest-charging version fills from 0-100% in nine hours on an 11.5 kW supply. If you're new to this, our electric car guide and our guide to charging an electric car cover the practicalities.

Two trims, and both are generously equipped - the question is comfort kit and wheel size rather than whether you're missing essentials.
Plus starts at 328 bhp with rear-wheel drive, on 20-inch "7 Spoke" alloy wheels with cloth upholstery. It includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heated steering wheel, 360 surround-view parking camera with 3D view, front and rear park assist, and a hands-free power tailgate. Privacy glass and air suspension are available as options.
The Plus is currently available from £740.64 a month.
Ultra also starts at 328 bhp and rear-wheel drive, moving to 21-inch "5 Spoke" alloys. Over Plus it adds an electrochromic panoramic roof that dims at the touch of a control, massaging front seats, privacy glass and air suspension as standard - the last being the one several testers say transforms the ride.
The Ultra is currently available from £853.97 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £113.33/mo more expensive.
Worth knowing before you order: on a lease you're locked into your wheel choice for the whole term, and larger rims generally firm up the ride. If you cover big miles on poor surfaces, it's worth asking our team which combinations are in build.
If you're shortlisting, the BMW i5 and the Audi A6 both cover similar ground as large executive cars. You can also browse the wider Volvo range if a different body style suits you better.
