Volvo EC40 Lease Deals

The Volvo EC40 is Volvo's coupe-roofed electric SUV, offering five seats, a 404-litre boot and a WLTP range of up to 358.5 miles. This page explains the powertrain and the six trims so you can pick the right version before you look at the live lease deals.

The Volvo EC40 is a five-seat electric SUV with a sloping coupe roofline, sold in one body style and with electric power only. It suits drivers who want Volvo's calm, well-built cabin and are happy to trade a little rear headroom for a sharper shape.

It sits alongside the boxier EX40 in Volvo's electric line-up, above the smaller EX30 and below the seven-seat EX90. Reviewers consistently describe it as the style-led choice of the pair, with almost identical manners from behind the wheel.

The choice is simple: one SUV body, one electric powertrain family with rear- or all-wheel drive, and six trims - Plus, Plus Pro, Plus Black Edition, Plus Pro Black Edition, Ultra and Ultra Black Edition.

About the Volvo EC40

The current EC40 is a 4.44 m electric coupe-SUV with five seats, a 404-litre boot and a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. It's built around comfort and refinement rather than sporting handling, and road testers reliably praise how quiet and relaxing it is.

Reviewers repeatedly note that the cabin materials feel expensive, whether it's the cloth upholstery on most trims or the suede textile/microtech trim on Plus and Ultra Black Edition. The common criticisms are equally consistent: the steeply raked rear screen limits the view back, and rear headroom is tighter than in the boxier EX40.

Range runs up to 358.5 miles (WLTP) on the best version, and every EC40 is automatic. Volvo's infotainment, with built-in navigation, comes on all of them.

Why lease a Volvo EC40?

Because the standard kit list is unusually complete, which matters more on a lease than on a purchase: you're specifying the car once, for the whole contract, and there's little you'd feel obliged to add.

Every EC40 has a fixed panoramic glass roof, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, a hands-free tailgate and a heat pump - useful for winter efficiency. Safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 92% for adult occupant protection and 89% for child occupants.

Practical points worth checking before you order: the boot holds 404 litres seats-up and 1,310 litres folded, the battery carries an 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty, and servicing is every 24 months or 18,000 miles.

Which EC40 powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain family here - electric - offered with a choice of battery size, power output and driven wheels.

Electric

Batteries run from 69 kWh to 82 kWh, power from 235 bhp to 436 bhp, and drive is rear- or all-wheel depending on version. WLTP range reaches up to 358.5 miles on the longest-legged version, with 0-62 mph taking between 4.6 and 7.3 seconds. All are automatic and all need charging.

Charging tops out at 205 kW on the fastest version, which takes 10-80% in 28 minutes; a 7.6 kW home wallbox fills the best version from 0-100% in 11 hours. If you're new to this, our electric car guide and charging guide cover the basics.

Which EC40 trim should I choose?

Six trims, and the differences are mostly wheels, lights and parking tech rather than comfort kit - the core equipment is shared.

Plus

The entry trim, and already well equipped: wired Android Auto, the fixed panoramic sunroof with high-gloss black rear roof panel, Connect suede textile/microtech upholstery, heated front seats and a front park assist sensor. It rides on 19-inch 5 Spoke alloys, with a 360-degree camera, privacy glass and a retractable towbar all available as options. The Plus is currently available from £550.73 a month.

Plus Pro

Plus Pro builds on Plus with active bending pixel LED headlights with adaptive shadow technology, a 360-degree surround-view parking camera with side proximity sensors, and front park assist. It also gains rear cross-traffic alert and privacy glass, keeps the 19-inch 5 Spoke wheels, and still offers the retractable towbar as an option. The Plus Pro is currently available from £577.00 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £26.27/mo more expensive.

Plus Black Edition

An edition of Plus, this one is about looks: it adds 20-inch 5 Spoke high-gloss black alloy wheels, plus privacy glass. The 360-degree camera and retractable towbar remain options. Worth knowing that road testers find the 19-inch wheels ride more softly on poor surfaces. The Plus Black Edition is currently available from £585.65 a month. Against the Plus, that is currently £34.92/mo more expensive.

Plus Pro Black Edition

The same treatment applied to Plus Pro - 20-inch 5 Spoke high-gloss black alloys over the Plus Pro's kit, so you keep the pixel LED headlights and surround-view camera and get the darker exterior look. The retractable towbar is an option. The Plus Pro Black Edition is currently available from £638.78 a month. Against the Plus Pro, that is currently £61.79/mo more expensive.

Ultra

Ultra takes the Plus Pro Black Edition specification and swaps in 20-inch 5 Spoke diamond-cut black alloy wheels. A retractable towbar is available as an option, useful given braked towing of up to 1,800 kg on the strongest versions. The Ultra is currently available from £637.52 a month. Against the Plus Pro Black Edition, that is currently £1.26/mo cheaper. Best value

Ultra Black Edition

The darkest-looking EC40 of the lot: an edition of Ultra with 20-inch 5 Spoke high-gloss black alloy wheels and Connect suede textile/microtech upholstery. The retractable towbar is again an option. The Ultra Black Edition is currently available from £637.44 a month. Against the Ultra, that is currently £0.08/mo cheaper. Best value

Volvo EC40 FAQs

It works well for a family of four. There are five seats, a 404-litre boot and heated rear seats as standard, but the coupe roofline trims rear headroom, so tall teenagers in the back are the thing to test on a viewing.

404 litres with the rear seats up, rising to 1,310 litres with them folded. Reviewers rate the shape rather than the outright figure - it's square, with a flat floor and no lip to lift things over.

Up to 358.5 miles on the WLTP test for the longest-range version, with the range across the line-up running from 300 miles. Real-world figures will sit below that, particularly in cold weather - the standard heat pump helps.

Yes, within limits. Braked towing is 1,500-1,800 kg depending on version and unbraked is 750 kg. A retractable towbar is a factory option on every trim, so it has to be specified at order - it can't be added to the contract later.

Volvo covers the car for 3 years or 60,000 miles, with the battery warranted for 8 years or 100,000 miles. There's also a 3-year paintwork guarantee and a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Servicing is every 24 months or 18,000 miles.

It depends entirely on what's available at the time. Rentals move with term, mileage and initial rental, and the cheapest trim isn't always the one you'd expect, so check the live EC40 deals on this page or ask our team to run the comparison for you.

Plus and Plus Pro use 19-inch 5 Spoke alloys; the Black Edition trims and Ultra move to 20-inch. Reviewers consistently find the smaller wheels ride better on rough British roads, while the 20s look sharper. It's a comfort-versus-looks call.

Specifications from Volvo's UK data and Euro NCAP; equipment and availability vary by version, so check the individual deal before you order.
