View dealThe Volkswagen Polo is a small five-seat hatchback that behaves like a bigger car. It's the supermini in Volkswagen's range, sitting below the Golf, and it has built its reputation on refinement and build quality rather than outright fun.
The choice here is refreshingly simple. One body style, one engine family - a 1-litre turbo petrol with 79-114 bhp, manual or automatic, front-wheel drive - and six trims: Life, Match, Match Plus, R-Line, Black Edition and Edition 50.
It suits drivers who want a compact car for town and commuting but still expect a calm motorway drive, plus a 351-litre boot and a 5-star Euro NCAP rating behind them. No charging, no battery to think about.

The Polo is the sixth-generation car, on sale in this form since 2021. It's a five-door, five-seat supermini measuring 4.07 m long, with a 351-litre boot that grows to 1,125 litres with the rear seats folded.
Reviewers consistently praise the ride comfort and the cabin quality, often describing it as a scaled-down Golf, and just as consistently note that rivals are more entertaining through corners. Road testers also single out interior space as unusually good for the class.
Volkswagen covers it with a 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty, a 3-year paintwork guarantee and a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Servicing runs to every 24 months or 18,600 miles.
Because the standard specification is generous and the running costs are predictable. Every Polo, whichever trim you pick, gets adaptive cruise control, wireless phone charging, a digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus front and rear parking sensors.
Safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and traffic sign recognition. Euro NCAP awarded the Polo 5 stars, with 94% for adult occupant protection and 80% for child occupant protection.
Practically, you get five seats, a 351-litre boot, a 10.7 m turning circle and a 40-litre fuel tank. Braked towing runs from 800 kg up to 1,100 kg depending on the version, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare.
There's one engine family, so the decision is about power output and gearbox rather than fuel type. Nothing here plugs in.
A three-cylinder turbo petrol producing 79-114 bhp, with 5 or 7-speed gearboxes and front-wheel drive. WLTP economy is 50.4-55.4 mpg and CO2 116-125 g/km. The 79 bhp entry version is a town car at heart; if you spend real time on motorways, the more powerful versions make more sense. 0-62 mph takes from 9.8 seconds on the quickest version, and insurance groups start at 3.
