The Toyota Yaris Cross is a compact hybrid crossover: about 4.17 metres long, five seats, five doors, and a 1.5-litre self-charging hybrid system that never needs plugging in. It gives you a raised driving position and a small footprint at the same time.

It suits drivers who want something easy to park and cheap to fuel, but who don't want the low-slung feel of a supermini. Town and suburban driving is where it makes most sense, and it slots in above the Yaris hatchback in Toyota's range.

About the Toyota Yaris Cross

The Yaris Cross is a small, high-riding five-seat hybrid built around Toyota's long-established petrol-electric system. It's a car designed for everyday use rather than adventure, despite the rugged cladding, and it comes with a 3-year or 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.

Reviewers consistently praise two things: fuel economy and build quality. Official WLTP economy runs from 55.4 to 64.2 mpg depending on version, and road testers regularly report strong real-world figures in stop-start traffic.

The criticisms are just as consistent. The cabin is plain rather than plush, the ride is on the firm side, and rear space is adequate rather than generous. Boot volume is 266 to 350 litres with the rear seats up depending on version, rising to 1,097 litres with them folded.

Why lease a Toyota Yaris Cross?

Because it's cheap to run, genuinely easy to live with and well equipped from the entry trim upwards. Every version has adaptive cruise control, Apple CarPlay, a rear-view camera, LED headlights and air conditioning as standard.

The safety kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition and automatic high beam. It scored four stars from Euro NCAP, with 79% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, 83% for vulnerable road users and 76% for safety assist.

Practical details matter more than headline numbers on a car this size. A 10.6-metre turning circle and a 36-litre fuel tank tell you what sort of driving it's built for, and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel. Servicing is every 12 months or 10,000 miles.

Which Yaris Cross powertrain is right for me?

There's only one, so the real decision is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Every Yaris Cross uses the same 1.5-litre hybrid system with 128 bhp and an automatic gearbox, so you're choosing traction rather than performance.

Hybrid (self-charging)

A 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine works with an electric motor and a 1.5 kWh battery, which charges itself as you drive and brake. No cable, no plug, no charging routine. It's automatic only, with 0-62 mph in 10.7 seconds front-wheel drive or 11.3 seconds with all-wheel drive, and CO2 of 100 to 116 g/km depending on version. All-wheel drive is worth considering if you live somewhere steep or rural; otherwise front-wheel drive is the sensible default. Icon

The entry trim, and far from bare. It has 16-inch 10 Spoke silver alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, a digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone integration including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, a driver monitoring camera and full-range intelligent adaptive cruise control.

The Icon is currently available from £303.82 a month.

Design

Design adds the kit most people notice daily: Toyota Smart Connect with a 10.5-inch multimedia display, keyless smart entry with push button start, wireless phone charging, front and rear parking sensors, privacy glass, white ambient lighting in the centre console, roof rails and front sports seats, on 17-inch 5 Double Spoke alloys.

The Design is currently available from £307.72 a month. Against the Icon, that is currently £3.90/mo more expensive.

Excel

Excel is the parking and comfort trim. It adds a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, dynamic guide lines on the reversing camera, advanced parking assist, a power hands-free tailgate, partial synthetic leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and dual-zone climate control, on 18-inch 15 Spoke alloys.

The Excel is currently available from £352.48 a month. Against the Design, that is currently £44.76/mo more expensive.

GR Sport

GR Sport keeps Excel's equipment and changes the character: a three-spoke GR Sport leather steering wheel, Alcantara upholstery and 18-inch 5 Double Spoke alloys. It's about look and feel rather than extra kit or extra power.

The GR Sport is currently available from £353.08 a month. Against the Excel, that is currently £0.60/mo more expensive.

Factory packs are worth a look before you order.
