The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a compact, all-electric family SUV, sold in one five-seat body and built around town driving, school runs and commuting rather than long motorway hauls. At 4.29 metres long, it's a compact footprint for easy town driving.
Every version is electric: a 49–61 kWh battery, 142–172 bhp, single-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, with a WLTP range of 214 to 265 miles depending on the version you choose.
So the choice is simpler than most. One body, one powertrain family, and three trims - Icon, Design and Excel - with a Bi-tone Pack available if you want the contrast roof.

The Urban Cruiser is Toyota's small electric SUV: five seats, five doors, 4.29 metres long, with a 216–222 litre boot depending on version and a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty. The battery is separately covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
The name is a revival rather than a continuation - it was last used on a very different Toyota years ago. Reviewers consistently praise how easy it is to drive around town: a high seating position, light steering, strong forward visibility and a 10.4-metre turning circle that makes tight car parks a non-event. Road testers are more critical of the ride on broken surfaces and of charging speeds, which trail the quickest small EVs.
Because the standard kit list is generous and the same safety package is fitted to every version. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and autonomous emergency braking are standard across the range.
So are a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, a digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, air conditioning, privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. Euro NCAP awarded the Urban Cruiser 4 stars, with 77% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupants, 79% for vulnerable road users and 72% for safety assist.
Practicality is modest but usable: 216–222 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, a 75 kg roof load, and braked towing up to 750 kg. A tyre repair kit is supplied rather than a spare wheel, which is worth knowing before you order.
There's only one to weigh up. The Urban Cruiser is electric only, so the real question is whether you can charge it where you park, and whether the range suits your week.
A 49–61 kWh battery (48–60 kWh usable), 142–172 bhp, 193 Nm, front-wheel drive and an automatic. WLTP range runs from 214 to 265 miles depending on version, with official efficiency of 4.1–4.2 miles/kWh and 0–62 mph in 8.7–9.6 seconds. Top speed is 93 mph.
Charging peaks at 53–67 kW on a rapid unit; the best version does 10–80% in 45 minutes at 67 kW, or 0–100% in six hours on an 11 kW home supply. If you can charge overnight at home, this car makes sense. If you rely on public rapid chargers weekly, read our electric car guide first.

Three trims, and the gaps between them are mostly about comfort and cabin tech rather than anything mechanical beyond power output.
Icon covers the essentials: 18-inch five-spoke black and silver alloys with wheel caps, cloth upholstery, a two-spoke synthetic leather steering wheel, rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors and an adaptive cruise control switch on the wheel. Its entry version has 142 bhp and front-wheel drive.
The Icon is currently available from £450.31 a month inc VAT.
Design keeps the 18-inch five-spoke alloys and cloth trim but adds a heated steering wheel and heated front seats - genuinely useful in an EV, because warming the driver uses far less energy than warming the whole cabin. Its entry version steps up to 172 bhp.
The Design is currently available from £286.72 a month inc VAT. Against the Icon, that is currently £163.60/mo cheaper (inc VAT). Best value
Excel moves to 19-inch five-spoke black and dark grey alloys with wheel caps, synthetic leather and fabric upholstery, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, a JBL premium sound system with eight speakers, an electrically adjustable driver's seat and wireless phone charging. It also starts at 172 bhp.
The Excel is currently available from £297.20 a month inc VAT. Against the Design, that is currently £10.49/mo more expensive (inc VAT).
Whichever trim you pick, the Bi-tone Pack is available as an option, and there are 11 paint choices across the range including Nimbus blue, Pine green and Spirit red/Black. Worth deciding early - paint and packs are fixed at order.
If you're cross-shopping small SUVs, the Ford Puma, Vauxhall Mokka, Peugeot 2008 and Hyundai Ioniq 3 all cover similar ground. You can also browse the rest of the Toyota range.
