View dealThe Renault 4 is a compact five-seat electric SUV: 4.14 m long, front-wheel drive, and styled as a modern take on Renault's 1960s original. It sits just above the 5 in Renault's small electric line-up, trading a little style for more space and a taller driving position.
It suits drivers who mostly cover town, school-run and commuting miles, charge at home or at work, and want something with character rather than another anonymous crossover. Reviewers consistently describe it as comfortable, easy to drive and unusually likeable inside for the money.
The choice is simple. One body, one powertrain - a 52 kWh battery with a 148 bhp motor and an automatic gearbox - and three trims: Evolution+, Techno+ and Iconic+.

The 4 is Renault's small electric SUV, designed around everyday practicality rather than outright performance. It carries five people, has a 339-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,113 litres with them folded, and comes with a 3-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
The name has history. The original 4 was a cheap, rugged workhorse sold across Europe and beyond for decades, and the current car borrows its round lights and ridged flanks without pretending to be a replica.
Road testers reliably praise the interior quality and the touchscreen, the composed ride at speed and the fact that the climate controls are physical buttons. The common criticisms: rear legroom is only adequate for taller adults, and it feels firm over poor town surfaces. Euro NCAP awarded it 4 stars, with 79% for adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection.
Because the standard specification is generous and the running costs are low. Every 4 gets keyless entry and start, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, a rear-view camera with rear parking sensors, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers and a heat pump, which helps protect range in cold weather.
Safety and assistance kit is standard across the range too: autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and an electric parking brake. Servicing is every 12 months or 18,000 miles, and the battery carries its own 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
Practically, it's a narrow car with a 10.8 m turning circle, which makes multi-storeys and tight streets far less stressful than the SUV label suggests. Our team is asked about charging more than anything else on this car - our guide to charging an electric car covers the basics before you order.
There's only one, so the decision is really whether electric suits your life. The 4 is fully electric, so it needs charging - there's no petrol or hybrid version - and every version uses the same motor, battery and automatic drivetrain.
A 52 kWh battery drives the front wheels through a 148 bhp motor and a single-speed automatic: 245 Nm of torque, 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds and a 93 mph top speed. Official efficiency is 3.9-4.0 miles per kWh depending on version.
Charging peaks at 100 kW, and on the best version a 0-100% rapid charge takes 55 minutes. At home on an 11 kW supply, the best version manages 0-100% in 4.9 hours, so overnight charging is comfortably within reach. If you're new to EVs, our electric car guide explains the jargon.

Three trims, all with the same 148 bhp powertrain and 18-inch alloy wheels, differing in upholstery, parking aids and comfort kit.
The entry trim is far from sparse. It gets 18-inch "Jogging" alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, keyless entry, wireless smartphone replication for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors.
The Evolution+ is currently available from £210.41 a month.
Techno+ swaps to 18-inch "Sixties" black diamond wheels and cloth/synthetic leather upholstery, and adds front, rear and side parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, voice control with built-in Google assistant and built-in navigation.
It also brings wireless phone charging, self-steering parking, privacy glass, ambient lighting, roof rails, regen paddles, a wi-fi hotspot and power-folding mirrors. The Canvas Pack, with recycled fabric and synthetic leather upholstery, is available as an option on the range.
The Techno+ is currently available from £229.86 a month. Against the Evolution+, that is currently £19.45/mo more expensive.
Iconic+ is the comfort-and-kit choice. Over Techno+ it adds 18-inch "Parisenne" black diamond wheels, a Harman Kardon premium audio system, an electric power tailgate with hands-free opening, a trimmed dashboard and an illuminated "Renault 4" badge that changes colour with the ambient lighting.
It also picks up heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Heated seats matter more than they sound on an EV - they warm you using less energy than heating the whole cabin.
The Iconic+ is currently available from £249.67 a month. Against the Techno+, that is currently £19.81/mo more expensive.
