The Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe is a two-door, four-seat coupe that sits between the C-Class and E-Class in Mercedes-Benz's line-up, replacing the two-door versions of both. It is about 4.87 metres long, carries 290 to 420 litres in the boot depending on version, and holds a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

It suits drivers who want a handsome car for covering distance in comfort, with occasional rear seats rather than full-time family space. Rear headroom is tight and the shallow rear window limits the view out, which is why every version gets a rear-view camera and parking sensors.

The choice is straightforward: petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid, two everyday trims in AMG Line and Premier Edition, and one performance version wearing the AMG badge.

About the Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe

The CLE Coupe is Mercedes-Benz's mid-size two-door, on sale in this form since 2024, and it took over from a pair of earlier coupes rather than replacing just one. Four seats, two doors, and a boot of up to 420 litres on the petrol and diesel versions.

Reviewers consistently describe it the same way: quiet, softly damped and relaxing over long distances, with a cabin lifted from the C-Class that feels genuinely expensive. The steering is light and the car is heavy, so keen drivers usually rate rival coupes as sharper.

Criticism tends to land on the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls and rear visibility. Mercedes-Benz backs the car with a 3-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and it can tow up to 1,800 kg braked.

CLE Coupe or CLE Convertible?

The Coupe is the more practical of the two. Both seat four and both measure 4.87 m long, but the Coupe carries up to 420 litres in the boot against 375-385 litres for the CLE Convertible, and it is the quieter, stiffer-feeling body.

The Convertible answers a different question. It trades a little boot space and a little refinement for a fabric roof, and its kerb weight starts higher, from 1,930 kg against 1,795 kg for the lightest Coupe. Towing is the same at 1,800 kg braked.

Why lease a Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe?

Because the standard specification is unusually complete for a car of this type, which means fewer awkward option decisions on a lease order. Every CLE Coupe, whatever the trim or engine, comes with heated front sports seats, electric seat memory, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging and built-in navigation.

Safety and assistance kit is standard across the board too: autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 93% for adult occupant protection and 83% for safety assist.

Servicing falls every 12,000 to 15,500 miles, which sits comfortably inside most lease terms. Worth knowing before you order: the spare is a tyre repair kit, not a wheel.

Which CLE Coupe powertrain is right for me?

All three are automatic with a nine-speed gearbox, so the real question is how you cover your miles: mixed driving, long motorway runs, or short trips with a charger at home.

Petrol

The broadest choice, running from 201 bhp up to 443 bhp, with rear- or all-wheel drive depending on version. Official economy spans 30.1 to 43.5 mpg and 0-62 mph takes between 4.2 and 7.4 seconds. No charging, no plug, and the simplest fit for varied driving.

Diesel

A 2-litre, 194 bhp rear-wheel-drive car with 440 Nm of torque, 0-62 mph in 7.5 seconds and official economy of 58.9 to 60.1 mpg. If you spend most of your contracted mileage on motorways, this is the version that makes the fewest compromises.

Plug-in hybrid

A 2-litre turbo with a 25.4 kWh battery (19.5 kWh usable) and 309 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds. Which CLE Coupe trim should I choose?

Two everyday trims and one performance version, and none of them is short of equipment.

AMG Line

The entry trim, starting at 201 bhp with rear-wheel drive. It brings 18-inch AMG 5 Twin Spoke alloys, leather upholstery, an instrument panel and beltlines in ARTICO man-made leather, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sports suspension, automatic parking assist and the parking package with reversing camera.

Premier Edition

Also available from 201 bhp and rear-wheel drive, this one is about comfort and theatre. Over AMG Line it adds 20-inch AMG Multi Spoke alloys in high-sheen black, Nappa leather, a panoramic sliding sunroof, heated steering wheel, head-up display, 360-degree camera, augmented-reality navigation, massaging and ventilated front seats, and a hands-free tailgate. Adaptive cruise control and active lane-change assist are available as options.

Then there is the performance CLE.

AMG

The 443 bhp petrol flagship, with all-wheel drive, 20-inch AMG Y Spoke alloys, adaptive suspension and four-wheel steering. Inside it adds ARTICO leather on the dashboard with contrast stitching, four-way lumbar support and SPEEDTRONIC cruise control with a variable speed limiter. Firmer, faster, and noticeably more serious to drive.

Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe FAQs

It works as an occasional four-seater rather than a family car. There are four seats and two doors, so rear passengers climb in past the front seats, and road testers regularly point out that rear headroom is limited under that sloping roofline.

Between 290 and 420 litres with the rear seats up, depending on the version. The diesel gives 420 litres, petrol versions 410 to 420 litres, and the plug-in hybrid 290 litres because of the battery. Roof load is 100 kg.

It will drive without charging, but you lose the point of it. The 25.4 kWh battery charges at up to 11 kW AC, roughly two hours from 10-100% on the best version, and there is no rapid DC charging. Lease it only if you can plug in at home or work.

Yes, up to 1,800 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked, and that applies to the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions. A towbar is a factory option you need to specify at order stage, so tell us before the order goes in rather than after.

Three years with unlimited mileage, which covers most standard lease terms. Paintwork is guaranteed for three years and there is a 30-year anti-corrosion guarantee. The plug-in hybrid battery is covered for six years or 62,000 miles, guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
