About the Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 is Mazda's sports car, sitting apart from the brand's SUVs and hatchbacks. This is the fourth-generation car, on sale in this form since 2017, with two seats, 3.92 metres of length and a kerb weight starting at 1,003kg.

Reviewers consistently praise the steering, the balance and the six-speed manual shift, and they're equally consistent about the compromises: it's noisier than a hatchback on a long motorway run, and storage is minimal. The boot holds 127 to 130 litres depending on version.

Which MX-5 powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain family: a petrol engine driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Nothing to plug in, nothing to charge, and no automatic in this range, so you need to be happy changing gear yourself.

Petrol, 130-181bhp, manual, rear-wheel drive

The four-cylinder petrol engine comes in 1.5 and 2.0-litre forms, producing 130 to 181bhp and 152 to 205Nm. That's 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds at one end and 6.5 seconds at the other, with a top speed of 126 to 137mph.

In plain terms: the smaller engine rewards revving and feels featherlight, the larger one pulls harder in gear and is the easier companion on faster roads. Road testers rate both highly and often suggest driving them back to back. Economy is 41.5 to 45.6mpg, with CO2 of 140 to 153g/km.
