The Fiat 500 was among the first cars to really enjoy a popular retro design appearance which is underpinned by an excellent performance in cities and towns as well as low running costs and all-round good motoring value.
Despite the tiny exterior proportions, there's a lot the space in the Fiat 500 which is a lovely recreation of the original 1960’s 500. It followed in the footsteps of other classically-inspired retro looking cars such as the VW Beetle and the Mini and the city car market is now a fiercely fought segment with the 500 still proving to be a popular choice.
However, the 500 offers a lot more than many of its competitors and a 2015-redsign will help ensure the little car's popularity remains undimmed. The interior is also well-designed with a modern and stylish approach to help underpin its retro and unique feel. The excellent 500c is the convertible version which brings even more to love about this small car.
The Fiat 500 comes in its original guise of three doors (if you need the larger versions then look for the Fiat 500L or the 500X) and three very good engines. Pick of the bunch is probably the TwinAir 875cc which has a turbocharger and two cylinders and an output of 84bhp with fuel economy of around 71 mpg.
This means the 500 is a nippy performer around town; the car is agile and fun to drive and helped in part by the nifty City Steering function which helps to lighten the steering at the push of a button
There's also a very nice MultiJet 1.3litre diesel unit available which should return around 79 mpg.
The Fiat 500 is a hatchback with a lot to offer and a decent level of equipment on the entry level Pop versions including steering wheel mounted controls, an impressive infotainment system and LED daytime running lights.
Other models also come with air con, alloy wheels, heated door mirrors and split folding rear seats.
Opt for the top of the range trim and drivers will find rear parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, a larger touchscreen for the infotainment system and front fog lights. Among the options list is an automatic gearbox.
With its nimble and fun handling, the Fiat 500 is a great city car and will deliver what drivers are looking for along with cheap costs and decent performance from the engines.
