The Mazda2 is an agile supermini that is fun to drive. It's also cheap to run with high comfort levels to add interest to what is an impressive package and a serious alternative in a competitive segment.
For a supermini, the engines in the Mazda2 are larger than its rivals with the excellent 1.5 Skyactiv-G petrol unit offering three power outputs. There's also a 1.5 Skyactiv-D diesel unit which is responsive unit and has economy of 83 mpg and emissions of 89g/km - which makes it one of the cleanest cars in its segment. Of the petrols, the unit that produces 89 bhp will return 63 mpg while having emissions of 105g/km. All of the engines are responsive and quick – the more powerful units deliver impressive performance levels.
The Mazda2 has style and great performance which makes it an excellent choice for a supermini. With its superb handling comes an opportunity to really enjoy motoring as the steering gives great feedback and the car is true on corners. Mazda has softened the suspension to help deal with the UK's road but it still has charm and ability. There's plenty of grip on the road with lots of control in the body which means that driving on winding country roads is a joy and it's also a decent performer on the motorways for long journeys.
However, the boot is fairly small at just 250 litres which will expand to 787 litres when the rear seats are folded flat. The Mazda2 is also very safe to drive having scored full marks in the Euro NCAP crash tests and comes with a range of safety features including anti-lock brakes, electronic brake assist and some models come with electronic stability control and curtain airbags.
In addition to being a fun car to drive there's also a lot of standard equipment on-board including a head-up display, air con, alloy wheels, USB connectivity and remote central locking. Other models also come with satnav and parking sensors. Essentially, the Mazda2 is a fantastic supermini with stylish good looks and lots of ability on the road but it's for its high reliability and equipment that really helps to set it apart from its rivals and buyers will enjoy a car that is really great fun to be in.
