The BMW X6 is a five-seat luxury SUV with a coupe-style roofline, sold in one body only and always with all-wheel drive. It's the car you choose when an X5 does the job but you want something that looks like it doesn't have to.
It sits alongside BMW's more upright SUVs rather than above or below them, sharing much of its engineering with the X5 while swapping a squared-off tail for a sloping one. Reviewers consistently rate it as one of the more entertaining large SUVs to drive, with a cabin that's beautifully put together.
The choice is refreshingly simple: petrol or 3-litre diesel, both automatic and all-wheel drive, in M Sport trim or as the 523bhp M60i.

The X6 is a large five-seat SUV, 4.96 metres long, built around style as much as function. It carries 580 litres of luggage with the rear seats up and 1,530 litres folded, and comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
BMW effectively invented the coupe-SUV with the first X6, and opinion on the shape has never settled. What road testers agree on is the driving: precise steering, huge grip from the all-wheel-drive system and body control that belies a kerb weight of 2,165-2,315kg depending on version.
The honest caveat is rear headroom and over-the-shoulder visibility, both squeezed by that roofline. If you regularly carry adults in the back, sit in it first. If you mostly travel two-up with occasional passengers, the compromise barely registers.
Because every X6 arrives heavily equipped, and on a lease you're paying to use it rather than own a car this expensive. A three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty covers a typical contract term, and run-flat tyres mean no spare to worry about.
Standard across the range: a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, heated front seats with electric adjustment and memory, a hands-free tailgate, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, a digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, adaptive suspension and a wi-fi hotspot. Driver assistance includes autonomous emergency braking, automatic high beam and LED headlights.
For towing, every version is rated at 2,700kg braked and 750kg unbraked, with a 100kg roof load. That covers most caravans and a decent twin-axle trailer.
Two choices, no plug. Both are automatic, both drive all four wheels, and neither needs charging - so it comes down to how many motorway miles you cover and how much noise you want.
From 376bhp to 523bhp, with 540-750Nm of torque, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Depending on version, 0-62mph takes 4.3-5.4 seconds and WLTP economy runs from 24.1 to 32.8mpg. Pick it if performance and engine character matter more than fuel bills.
A 3-litre six-cylinder with 294-347bhp and 670-720Nm, again eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. WLTP economy is 38.7-39.2mpg with CO2 from 189g/km, and 0-62mph takes 5.5-6.1 seconds. The sensible pick for long-distance drivers and anyone towing regularly.

There's one everyday trim and one performance version, and the split is mostly about which engine you want under the bonnet.
M Sport starts at 294bhp with all-wheel drive, on 20-inch Star Spoke Style 740m alloys, with artificial leather upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, an M leather steering wheel, a parking assistant pack, enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging, keyless access, a powered tailgate, built-in navigation and a rear-view camera. A head-up display, panoramic roof, massaging or ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel are all available as options.
The M Sport is currently available from £1,058.96 a month.
Now the performance X6. The M60i is the 523bhp petrol version, riding on 21-inch Y Spoke Style 741m alloys, with privacy glass added and the same artificial leather upholstery. Options include a head-up display, panoramic roof, massaging and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, automatic parking assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
The M60i is currently available from £1,433.12 a month.
Both trims can be specified with the Pro Pack, Tech Pack and the combined Tech/Pro packs, which bundle options rather than form separate trims.
