The BMW X6 has fun and ability in what is an excellent SUV where luxury and practicality are equal. Nothing really compares with the X6 and the new model is even better than the previous one.
Though there's a decent range of petrol and diesel engines, BMW say that most UK drivers opt for its entry-level 30d diesel model. The engine should return 47 mpg while having emissions of 157g/km with a 0 to 62 mph time of 6.7 seconds. Drivers wanting more performance should look at the M50d which will sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just over five seconds but its economy drops to 42 mpg and its emissions rise to 174g/km.
While the X6 is a large car and heavy too, this is disguised well and it's an agile performer in a variety of settings. The driving position is excellent and the car has responsive steering and it is great fun to drive with an eight speed automatic gearbox offering smooth and excellent changes. The entry-level X6 offers excellent roadholding and responsive engine to make it a great choice.
The X6 was the first model from BMW that took the SUV concept and blended it with a coupe-like appearance. With its raised ride height, the X6 has proved to be a successful combination.
However, the X6 also offers decent off-road performance thanks to its sophisticated four-wheel-drive system though it's not a tough off-roader to take lots of punishment. The vehicle does grip the roads very well and offers a fun experience on country roads.
The X6 has lots of standard equipment including the firm's eCall system which will contact emergency services in the event of an accident. There's also satnav and a voice recognition service, heated seats, cruise control that brakes the car automatically, tyre pressure monitors and xenon headlights. Other models come with twin exhaust pipes, bigger alloys, styling tweaks and a sports steering wheel.
There's lots of room on board and a long list of optional extras including ambient interior lighting, heated front seats and a collision warning system.
