Engines and performance for the BMW X1

The new BMW X1 was unveiled in 2019 with a choice of twin-turbocharged engines, plus there's a new plug-in hybrid in the pipeline. There are three- and four-cylinder engines available and all deliver fuel economy and driving performance. Of the range, there is a 1.5 litre petrol unit producing 140 hp, for the sDrive18i, with torque of 220 Nm. There's a choice of either a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual box with fuel consumption of around 55mpg. There's also a 2.0 litre option delivering 192 hp and torque of 280 Nm. The engine delivers a top speed of 140 mph with emissions of 129g/km. Of the diesels, there is a 2.0 litre unit producing 150 hp with torque of 350 Nm with fuel economy of 55 mpg. Drivers also have the choice of a 190 hp all-wheel-drive offering. In 2020, the BMW X1 will see the addition of PHEV technology featuring a battery producing 9.7 kWh and able to deliver 31 miles of all-electric driving range.

Equipment and handling

The revamped BMW X1, the most popular of the firm's 'X' models, saw comfort and functionality levels being improved. It's a spacious cabin designed for everyday use, particularly from families. There's a hands-free tailgate, a sizeable boot and the interior features an impressive instrument panel and nice durable upholstery and soft touch plastics. The X1 also has a new control display featuring voice control so drivers can have a quick overview of their vehicle's most important information. There's the option of a full-colour head-up display to access this driving information and BMW has added its ConnectedDrive services which improves smartphone connectivity. The new model has a sportier, more bold exterior styling and it's a comfortable car to drive over long journeys. It's also an agile offering for driving around town with responsive engines and nice steering feedback. In its segment, the BMW X1 is a better-built and more fun to drive offering than all of its rivals and it's been a popular choice with buyers since its launch in 2015 for very good reason - they've all enjoyed a quality interior and it's an all-round practical offering.
