The BMW iX is BMW's flagship electric SUV: a five-seat, five-door car built around a 111.5 kWh battery, with all-wheel drive, an automatic gearbox and a WLTP range of up to 424.4 miles. It sits at the top of BMW's electric line-up.

It suits drivers who cover long distances in comfort and want the space of a big SUV without a combustion engine. At 4.97 metres long with a 500-litre boot, it's a genuine family car rather than a style exercise.

The choice is simple: one body style, one electric powertrain, and two trims - M Sport and M70 - plus a handful of optional packs.

About the BMW iX

The iX is a purpose-built electric SUV rather than a converted petrol model, and that shows in the cabin: a flat floor, no transmission tunnel and a light, lounge-like feel. Reviewers consistently praise its ride comfort, quietness and the quality of its interior.

The styling divides opinion, and road testers rarely pretend otherwise. What they agree on is how easy it is to live with, helped by a 500-litre boot that grows to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded, five seats, and a WLTP range of up to 424.4 miles on the longest-legged version.

Every iX comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty, and the battery is covered for eight years or 100,000 miles.

Why lease a BMW iX?

Because the iX is generously equipped before you touch the options list, and leasing keeps you in a current car while the technology moves on quickly. Every version has all-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display and massaging, heated front seats.

Also standard across the range: a heated steering wheel, electric seat memory, a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety side you get autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic sign recognition, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors.

Practical details matter on a car this size. The iX will tow up to 2,500 kg braked (750 kg unbraked), carries 75 kg on the roof, and comes with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel. Which iX powertrain is right for me?

There's only one: a fully electric, all-wheel-drive setup with an automatic gearbox and a 111.5 kWh battery. No petrol, no diesel, no hybrid version - so the question is really how you'll charge it.

Electric: 111.5 kWh battery, 537-650 bhp

Power runs from 537 bhp to 650 bhp depending on version, with 0-62 mph taking between 3.8 and 4.6 seconds. WLTP range is up to 424.4 miles, and efficiency is quoted at 2.9 to 3.4 miles per kWh. It's automatic and all-wheel drive throughout.

Charging is where planning pays off. The best version takes 10-80 per cent in 35 minutes at 195 kW on a rapid charger, or 11.3 hours from empty to full at 11 kW at home. A home wallbox makes the iX far easier to live with - our guide on how to charge an electric car explains the options.

Which iX trim should I choose?

Two trims: M Sport is the entry point with 537 bhp, and M70 is the 650 bhp performance version with air suspension as standard. Both are all-wheel drive, both seat five, and both share the same core equipment.

M Sport

M Sport brings adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist, BMW Live cockpit plus with navigation and BMW maps, a three-spoke M sport leather multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats and an interior camera. It rides on 21-inch Style 1024 Multicolour 3d alloys, with Alcantara and leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control.

Ventilated front seats, a hands-free tailgate, four-zone climate control, privacy glass, a fixed towbar and air suspension are all available as options. The M Sport is currently available from £826.12 a month.

M70

The M70 is the performance iX with 650 bhp, part of a range where 0-62 mph runs from 3.8 to 4.6 seconds and top speed from 124 to 155 mph. Over the M Sport it adds four-zone climate control, privacy glass and air suspension, and it wears 22-inch M Aerodynamics Style 1026 alloys.

Ventilated front seats, a hands-free tailgate and a fixed towbar remain options. The M70 is currently available from £1,068.13 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £242.02/mo more expensive.

Optional packs

Packs sit on top of a trim rather than replacing it. The Skylounge Pack adds the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof, the Tech Pack adds the Technology plus pack with Park assistant pro including Park assistance plus, and there's a Pro Pack plus combinations of the two.

Worth deciding before you order, not after. Once a car is built to a specification, that's the car you'll have for the length of the contract, so check what's included on the individual deal.

Yes. It's a five-seat SUV with a 500-litre boot, rising to 1,750 litres with the rear seats folded, and a three-metre wheelbase that frees up rear legroom. The flat floor means the middle rear seat is less compromised than in many rivals.

WLTP range is up to 424.4 miles on the longest-range version, from a 111.5 kWh battery. Quoted efficiency is 2.9 to 3.4 miles per kWh. Real-world range depends on wheel size, weather, speed and load, so treat the official figure as a best case.

The fastest version accepts up to 195 kW on a rapid charger and covers 10-80 per cent in around 35 minutes. On an 11 kW home or workplace supply, the best version takes 11.3 hours from empty to full, which suits overnight charging.

Yes - up to 2,500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked. A fixed towbar is a factory option on both M Sport and M70, and it has to be specified when the car is built, so tell us before the order goes in if you need one.

Three years with unlimited mileage from BMW, plus an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty. Servicing is every 24 months. On a typical lease term that means the car stays under warranty throughout, which is one less thing to budget for.
