View dealThe BMW i5 is the fully electric version of BMW's long-running executive saloon and estate, sold in this form since 2024. It's a five-seat, 5.06-metre car aimed at drivers who cover serious miles and want them to pass quietly.
It sits between the smaller i4 and the limousine-class i7 in BMW's electric line-up, and it's the choice for anyone who wants an EV that still looks and feels like a traditional executive car rather than a tall crossover.
The choice is refreshingly simple: two body styles (saloon or estate), one battery, and four trims running from Sport Edition to the 593 bhp M60.

The i5 is a large electric executive car built on the same body as the combustion 5 Series, with five seats, a boot of 490 to 570 litres depending on body style, and a three-year, unlimited-mileage manufacturer warranty.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin quality, the refinement and the long-distance driving position, and they rate it as one of the better big EVs to drive on a decent road. The common criticisms are its sheer size on tight streets, and a WLTP range of up to 374.7 miles that some rivals beat on paper.
Road testers also tend to prefer the rear-drive 335 bhp versions for everyday use, on the basis that the extra performance further up the range is more than most drivers will ever need.
Two shapes, identical underneath. The saloon is the sleeker of the pair; the estate trades a little kerbside elegance for a much bigger, squarer load bay. Both are 5.06 m long with a 3.00 m wheelbase and seat five.
The four-door saloon carries 490 litres with the rear seats up and keeps the classic executive profile. It's the one to have if the boot is mostly suitcases and golf clubs rather than buggies and dog crates.
The five-door estate takes boot space to 570 litres seats up and 1,700 litres folded, with a 100 kg roof load rather than the saloon's 75 kg. Reviewers generally consider it the better-looking and more useful of the two.
Leasing suits a car like this because the i5 is heavily specified from the entry trim upwards, so you're not obliged to chase expensive versions to get the equipment you actually use every day.
Every i5 has a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster and ambient lighting. Driver assistance covers autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic high beam.
On the practical side, braked towing runs from 1,500 kg up to 2,000 kg depending on version, servicing is every 24 months, and the battery carries its own eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty. Worth knowing before you order: there's no spare wheel, just a tyre repair kit.
There's only one to weigh up: the i5 is electric across the range, with a single 83.9 kWh battery and an automatic transmission. What changes is power and how many wheels drive.
The 83.9 kWh battery gives a WLTP range of up to 374.7 miles, with 335 to 593 bhp depending on version and rear- or all-wheel drive available. It needs plugging in, obviously - our electric car guide covers the basics if this is your first EV. Best-version charging is 10-80% in 30 minutes at 205 kW.

Four trims, and the jump between them is smaller than the names suggest: all the everyday versions start from 335 bhp and rear-wheel drive, with wheels, upholstery and suspension doing most of the differentiating.
The entry trim already includes adaptive LED headlights, a three-spoke leather multi-function steering wheel, a wireless charging tray, an ambient lighting pack and electrically adjustable front sports seats, on 19-inch "Triplex Spoke Style 933" alloys with artificial leather upholstery. A head-up display, panoramic glass roof and powered tailgate are available as options.
The Sport Edition is currently available from £709.10 a month.
M Sport adds electrically adjustable lumbar support for driver and front passenger over the Sport Edition, plus sports suspension, leather and artificial leather upholstery and 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 935 M" alloys. Adaptive suspension joins the options list here.
The M Sport is currently available from £716.02 a month. Against the Sport Edition, that is currently £6.91/mo more expensive.
M Sport Pro adds launch control over the M Sport and moves onto 20-inch "Star Spoke Style 938 M" alloys. Otherwise the equipment and option list mirror the M Sport, so this one is mainly about the look and the wheels.
The M Sport Pro is currently available from £739.67 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £23.65/mo more expensive.
Then there's the performance version.
The M60 makes 593 bhp with all-wheel drive, and adds a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system over the M Sport Pro, along with electric seat memory, keyless entry and start, four-zone climate control, privacy glass and adaptive suspension on 20-inch "Aerodynamic Style 940 M" alloys. Massaging and ventilated front seats are optional.
The M60 is currently available from £905.75 a month. Against the M Sport Pro, that is currently £166.08/mo more expensive.
Factory packs sit on top of the trims rather than replacing them: the Tec+ Pack, Tech+ Pack and Tech+/22kW packs bring the Technology plus pack with Parking Assistant Professional, alongside the Cmf+ Pack, Comf+ Pack, Comfort+ Pack, 22kWCh Pack and Ultimate Pack. Ask our team which packs are on the funded builds you're looking at, because availability varies.
If you're cross-shopping the i5, the obvious one to put alongside it is the Audi A6. You can also browse the wider BMW range if a different size or body style would suit you better.
