View dealThe BMW i5 Saloon is the all-electric version of BMW's long-running executive four-door: five seats, a 490-litre boot, 5.06 metres of length and a single 83.9 kWh battery serving every version. It's aimed at drivers who want a quiet, well-built company car or long-distance cruiser without moving to an SUV.
In BMW's line-up it sits above the smaller i4 and below the i7 limousine. Only the powertrain is different.
The choice here is simple enough: one body style on this page, one electric powertrain in 335-593 bhp forms, and four specifications - Sport Edition, M Sport, M Sport Pro and the performance M60.

The i5 Saloon is a large executive EV built to do the job the 5 Series has always done - cover big mileages quietly and comfortably - with electric drive instead of diesel. Five seats, four doors, 5.06 m long.
Reviewers consistently praise the interior quality, the curved screen setup and the refinement at motorway speeds, and most conclude it's the most rounded electric car in its class. The common criticism is that it's heavier and more comfort-biased than older BMW saloons, so it flatters rather than thrills on a back road.
Practically, the boot holds 490 litres with the rear seats up, WLTP range reaches up to 374.7 miles on the most efficient version, and BMW covers the car for three years with unlimited mileage, plus eight years or 100,000 miles on the battery.
Choose the Saloon if you want the cleaner shape and a 490-litre boot is enough; choose the i5 Estate if load space decides it. Both are five-seaters, both measure 5.06 m long, and both tow up to 2,000 kg braked on the right version.
The Estate's boot is 570 litres with the seats up and 1,700 litres folded, through a tailgate rather than a letterbox-shaped saloon opening, and it carries up to 100 kg on the roof against the Saloon's 75 kg. It's also slightly heavier, at 2,180-2,350 kg versus 2,120-2,295 kg.

Because the standard specification is unusually complete for a car in this class, and because an electric executive saloon makes a strong company car case. Every i5 Saloon, whichever trim you pick, gets the same core kit.
That includes a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, self-steering parking, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, a digital instrument cluster and ambient lighting. Safety kit runs to autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beam and LED headlights.
Servicing falls every 24 months and there's a tyre repair kit rather than a spare. Insurance groups run from 43 to 49, which is worth checking with your insurer before you order rather than after.
There's one: full electric, in several power outputs.
An 83.9 kWh battery (81.2 kWh usable), 335-593 bhp, automatic, and rear- or all-wheel drive depending on version. WLTP range runs from 319 to 375 miles, with up to 374.7 miles quoted for the best version. Charging peaks at 205 kW, taking 10-80% in 30 minutes at that rate.
There's no engine and no fuel tank, so you'll charge it - ideally at home overnight. Fitted with the 22 kW on-board charger, the best version refills 0-100% in 4.3 hours on AC. Our electric car guide and charging guide cover the basics if this is your first EV.

Four to pick from, and the gaps between them are narrower than the names suggest.
The entry version: 335 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 19-inch "Triplex Spoke Style 933" alloys and artificial leather upholstery. It brings adaptive LED headlights, electrically adjustable front sports seats, a wireless charging tray, ambient lighting pack, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate, privacy glass and a wi-fi hotspot. A head-up display, panoramic glass roof, heated steering wheel and powered tailgate are optional.
Same 335 bhp rear-drive setup, with sports suspension, 19-inch "Double Spoke Style 935 M" alloys and leather and artificial leather upholstery. The useful addition is electrically adjustable lumbar support for driver and front passenger - worth having if you sit in the car for hours. Adaptive suspension joins the options list.
A step up in wheels and drama rather than comfort kit: 20-inch "Star Spoke Style 938 M" alloys and launch control over M Sport, with the same leather and artificial leather trim. Options mirror M Sport, including the panoramic glass roof, head-up display and adaptive suspension.
The performance version: 593 bhp, all-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds and 20-inch "Aerodynamic Style 940 M" alloys. Over M Sport Pro it adds a Bowers and Wilkins surround sound system, electric seat memory, four-zone climate control and adaptive suspension as standard. Massaging and ventilated front seats are optional.
Several factory packs sit on top of these trims, including the Tech+ and Comfort+ packs and the 22 kW charging pack. Which ones appear on a given lease depends on how the car was specified, so check the individual deal.
If you're weighing up other large executive cars, the Audi A6 covers much the same ground. You can also browse the wider BMW range if a different size or body style suits you better.
