View dealThe BMW I4 is an all-electric five-door hatchback that drives the way a BMW saloon always has, only without the engine. It's the electric alternative to the brand's traditional compact executive cars, and it sits between the smaller models and the bigger electric SUVs in BMW's range.
The choice is refreshingly simple. One body style, one powertrain family - a 70.3–83.9 kWh battery, 282–593 bhp, automatic, rear- or all-wheel drive - and three versions to pick from: Sport, M Sport and the 593 bhp M60.
It suits company car drivers, motorway commuters and anyone moving out of a petrol or diesel BMW who wants the switch to feel familiar rather than experimental. Electric range runs up to 377.2 miles (WLTP) on the best version.

The I4 has been on sale in this form since 2021, and it remains BMW's electric five-door hatchback rather than a saloon. That's a real everyday advantage.
Reviewers consistently praise the way it drives - composed, quiet and more engaging through corners than most electric rivals - along with the build quality and the infotainment. The common criticisms are rear space, which is tight for tall adults, and charging speeds that newer designs have since beaten.
Practically, it's a five-seater with a 470-litre boot, 1,290 litres with the rear seats folded, and BMW covers it with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty plus an eight-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.
Because every I4 arrives well equipped, and leasing keeps you in a current electric car without taking a view on what it'll be worth in four years' time. Heated front seats, built-in navigation, a powered tailgate and three-zone climate control are standard right across the range.
So is the driver-assistance kit most people actually use: autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and self-steering parking. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are fitted throughout, as are LED headlights on Sport. Euro NCAP awarded the I4 four stars, with 87% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection.
The I4 will also tow up to 1,600 kg braked, which is unusual for an electric car of this shape. Charging is worth planning around: the best version manages 10–80% in 30 minutes at 205 kW, or 0–100% in seven hours on an 11 kW home supply. Our electric car guide covers the basics if this is your first EV.
There's only one: the I4 is electric, full stop. No petrol, no diesel, no hybrid version, so the real question is how much power and range you need and whether you can charge where you park.
A 70.3–83.9 kWh battery, 282–593 bhp, automatic, and rear- or all-wheel drive depending on version. WLTP range runs from 305 miles up to 377.2 miles, and 0–62 mph takes between 3.7 and 6.0 seconds. It needs charging, so home or workplace charging makes ownership far easier.

Sport and M Sport are the everyday choices and share the same 282 bhp rear-wheel-drive starting point; the M60 is the performance version with 593 bhp and all-wheel drive. Kit differences are smaller than the badges suggest.
Sport runs 17-inch "V Spoke Style 851" alloy wheels with artificial leather upholstery, and includes the parking assistant pack, automatic parking assist, LED headlights, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and the Live Cockpit Plus set-up with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 14.9-inch centre display. Ambient light projects into the door apertures as you get in and out.
The Sport is currently available from £771.92 a month.
M Sport is mainly a look and a feel rather than a big equipment jump: it adds a three-spoke flat-bottom M Sport leather steering wheel, sports suspension, 18-inch "Style 858m" alloys and cloth upholstery. Adaptive cruise control, matrix LED headlights, an opening panoramic roof and heated rear seats are all available as options.
The M Sport is currently available from £411.23 a month. Against the Sport, that is currently £360.70/mo cheaper. Best value
Then there's the performance I4. The M60 produces 593 bhp through all-wheel drive, and it adds adaptive suspension, privacy glass, an electrically adjustable driver's seat and seat memory over M Sport. Keyless entry and wireless phone charging are optional here.
The M60 is currently available from £687.08 a month. Against the M Sport, that is currently £275.86/mo more expensive.
If you're weighing up the I4 against other premium electric four-doors, the Mercedes-Benz C Class Electric covers much of the same ground. You can also browse the rest of the BMW range if you'd rather stay with the badge.
