View dealThe Audi A3 Hatchback is the compact premium five-door that sits at the entry point of Audi's car range, and it's the version most drivers mean when they say "A3". Five seats, five doors, roughly 4.34 metres long, and a cabin that road testers consistently rate as a class above the mainstream hatchbacks it shares its engineering with.
It suits drivers who want a small, well-finished car that still feels grown-up on a motorway: commuters, company car drivers, couples and small families who don't want an SUV. Rear space is decent for the size, though taller adults behind tall adults will notice the limits.
The choice here is straightforward. One body style on this page, three powertrains - Petrol, Diesel and Plug-in hybrid - four everyday trims from Technik to Black Edition, and two performance S3 versions above them.

This is the fourth-generation A3, on sale in this form since 2026, and it's a five-seat, five-door hatchback measuring 4.34-4.35 m long.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin quality, the driving position and how quiet it is at a cruise; the common criticisms are road noise on the bigger wheels and a firmer ride on sports-suspension versions. Boot space runs from 280 to 380 litres with the rear seats up depending on version, rising to 1,100-1,200 litres folded. Euro NCAP awarded five stars, with 86% for adult occupant protection, and every A3 comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
The Hatchback is the practical one. Its tailgate and folding rear seats give 280-380 litres with the seats up and 1,100-1,200 litres folded, against 325-425 litres in the boot of the A3 Saloon, which has four doors.
Both seat five and share the same 2.63-2.64 m wheelbase, but the Saloon is longer at 4.50-4.51 m, so the Hatchback is the easier car to park and load. Towing is similar, up to 1,600 kg braked for the Hatchback. If you'd rather see every version side by side, start on the full Audi A3 range page.
Because the standard specification is strong across the whole range, which matters more on a lease than on a purchase: you're choosing a car for two to four years, not building one to keep. Every A3 Hatchback gets adaptive cruise control, a digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone climate control and voice control.
Safety and assistance kit is standard too: autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, a rear-view camera, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming mirror. Practicality is sensible rather than vast - 11.1 m turning circle, a 45-55 litre fuel tank depending on version, and a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.
Pick on how and where you drive: petrol for most people, diesel for high motorway mileage, plug-in hybrid if you can charge regularly.
The broadest choice: 114-328 bhp from 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, manual or automatic, front- or all-wheel drive. WLTP economy spans 33.2-54.3 mpg with CO2 from 119 g/km, and 0-62 mph takes between 4.7 and 9.9 seconds depending on which version you choose. No charging, no compromise on boot space.
One version: a 2.0-litre with 148 bhp and 360 Nm, a seven-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. WLTP economy of 54.3-57.6 mpg and 380 litres of boot space make it the long-distance pick, and it's the strongest tower in the range at 1,600 kg braked.
A 1.5-litre turbo with a 25.7 kWh battery (19.7 kWh usable) and 201 bhp, automatic and front-wheel drive. It needs plugging in to make sense: the best version charges 0-100% in 2.5 hours at 11 kW at home, or 10-80% in 26 minutes at 40 kW. The boot drops to 280 litres. Our electric and hybrid leasing guides cover the charging side.

Four everyday trims, then two performance S3 versions - the difference is mostly wheels, seats, lighting and screen.
The entry version, from 114 bhp and front-wheel drive, on 17-inch "5 Arm Style" alloys with cloth upholstery. You get LED headlights with halogen rear lights, power-folding mirrors, camera-based traffic sign recognition, a twin-spoke leather multifunction steering wheel and Audi connect navigation and infotainment on demand. A fixed panoramic glass roof, roof rails and a fixed towbar are options.
Sport swaps to 17-inch "5-v-spoke" alloys and adds the things people miss most: heated front seats, front sports seats and MMI Navigation Plus with a 10.1-inch colour touchscreen built in. Upholstery stays cloth. The same panoramic roof, roof rails and towbar options carry over.
The sportier look, and the first trim with leather. Over Sport it adds LED headlights with LED rear lights pro, twin leather upholstery with S-embossed front sports seats, privacy glass, ambient lighting, sports suspension and an LED third brake light, on 18-inch "5-twin-spoke" alloys.
Black Edition is about appearance rather than extra equipment: it takes S Line's kit and dresses it in darker exterior detailing on 19-inch "5-arm-y Structure" alloys, with leather upholstery and a 148 bhp entry version. Panoramic roof, roof rails, towbar and sports seats remain options.
Now the performance versions. The S3 Black Edition is a 328 bhp petrol with all-wheel drive and 19-inch "5 Twin Spoke" alloys, adding a three-spoke flat-bottomed leather sport steering wheel with paddles, extended ambient lighting package Pro, a head-up display, matrix LED headlights and sports seats.
The fully loaded S3: same 328 bhp all-wheel-drive setup on "Multi Spoke" 19-inch alloys, with a panoramic roof as standard, 3D and 360-degree surround-view cameras, park assist pro with remote functionality, self-steering parking, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise assist plus.
If you're cross-shopping the A3 Hatchback, the obvious one to drive back-to-back is the BMW 1 Series, which reviewers generally rate as the keener drive of the two. Everything else Audi builds sits on our Audi leasing pages.
