The Volkswagen ID.5 is Volkswagen's electric coupe-SUV, with five seats, a 539-litre boot and a WLTP range of up to 352 miles. This page explains the powertrain, the trim choices and what to check before you order through FVL.
The Volkswagen ID.5 is an all-electric coupe: five seats, a sloping roofline and a 539-litre boot, sitting above the smaller ID cars in Volkswagen's electric line-up as the sleeker-bodied sister to the more upright ID.4.
It suits a family or a company car driver who wants an electric car that covers long motorway runs calmly and doesn't look like a conventional box-shaped SUV. Road testers consistently describe it as comfortable, refined and easy to drive rather than exciting.
The choice here is simple: one coupe body, one electric powertrain in several outputs, and three trims - Match Pure, Essential Pro and GTX Edition. These are the outgoing versions, available while stocks last.

The ID.5 has been on sale in this form since 2022 as the coupe-bodied member of Volkswagen's ID family. It's about 4.58 m long, carries five people, and comes with a 3-year / 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty.
What reviewers praise is the way it travels: quiet, settled at speed and effortless over distance, with a WLTP range of up to 352 miles on the longest-legged version. The common criticism is the cabin - plenty of hard plastics, and most functions handled through the touchscreen rather than buttons.
Practicality survives the roof chop better than you'd expect. The boot holds 539 litres with the rear seats up, and rear passengers get proper adult space.
Because the ID.5 is generously equipped as standard, and leasing lets you run it on a fixed monthly rental for a set term rather than committing to a fast-moving electric car for the long haul.
Every version gets adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control and a rear-view camera with front and rear parking sensors.
The driver-assistance list is just as full: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, active lane-change assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam and autonomous emergency braking. Euro NCAP awarded the ID.5 five stars, with 93% for adult occupant protection.
It'll tow, too - up to 1,800 kg braked on the strongest versions, with a retractable towbar available as a factory option across the range.
There's one answer here: the ID.5 is electric only. No petrol, no diesel, no hybrid - you charge it, and the gearbox question doesn't arise because every version is automatic.
Battery capacity runs from 62 kWh to 84 kWh, power from 187 bhp to 335 bhp, and WLTP range up to 352 miles. Rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, depending on the version. Best suited to drivers who can charge at home or at work - the best version takes 6.5 hours for a full charge at 11 kW, or 26 minutes from 10-80% at 105 kW on a rapid charger. If you're new to this, our electric car guide covers the basics.

Three trims, and the gap between them is as much about drivetrain and equipment as it is about badges.
The everyday choice: 187 bhp, rear-wheel drive, 19-inch "Hamar" alloy wheels and cloth upholstery, with a hands-free tailgate and privacy glass over the Essential Pro. A heat pump and a retractable towbar are both available as options.
The Match Pure is currently available from Price on request a month. Against the Essential Pro, that is currently Price comparison unavailable.
Then there are the quicker ID.5s.
A step up in pace - 282 bhp, still rear-wheel drive. It keeps the 19-inch "Hamar" alloys and cloth seats, and brings navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leatherette inserts in the door and side trims, heated front seats, LED headlights and self-steering parking. Heat pump and towbar optional.
The Essential Pro is currently available from Price on request a month.
The performance version: 335 bhp and all-wheel drive, on 20-inch "Ystad" alloys and sports suspension. Over the Match Pure it adds an opening panoramic glass roof and the top sport plus interior with lumbar support, plus a head-up display, 360-degree camera, matrix LED headlights, massaging front seats and an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory. Adaptive suspension is an option here only.
The GTX Edition is currently available from Price on request a month. Against the Match Pure, that is currently Price comparison unavailable.
Honestly? Reviewers are lukewarm on the GTX as a driver's car - quick in a straight line, but not transformed. Choose it for the kit and the all-wheel drive traction rather than thrills.
