View dealThe Volkswagen Caddy California Maxi is a five-seat MPV that doubles as one of Volkswagen's factory-built campers. It's for couples and small families who want one vehicle for the school run, the tip run and the odd weekend away, without stepping up to a full-size motorhome.
At 4.85 m long and 1.80 m tall, it fits most driveways and a good number of multi-storey car parks.
The choice is refreshingly simple: one body, one trim called Caddy California Maxi, and two engines - a 1.5-litre turbo petrol with 114 bhp in manual or automatic form, or a 2-litre diesel with 120 bhp and an automatic gearbox. Both drive the front wheels.

The Caddy California Maxi is the longer-bodied version of Volkswagen's compact camper, with five seats, a 446-litre boot with the rear seats up and 1,720 litres once they're folded. Volkswagen covers it with a 3-year or 100,000-mile warranty.
Reviewers consistently make the same point about it: it drives like a car, not a motorhome. Steering is precise, it's quiet at motorway speeds, and the 12.1 m turning circle keeps narrow lanes and campsite tracks manageable.
The criticism is equally consistent. Camping provision is deliberately basic compared with bigger campers, and the cabin is built from hard-wearing rather than plush materials. Road testers tend to conclude that's exactly the point, and that the longer Maxi body is the version worth having.
Because it earns its keep every day of the week, not just in August. Every version gets keyless entry and start, a digital instrument cluster, air conditioning, roof rails, DAB digital radio, power-folding mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and an electric parking brake.
Parking and safety kit is thorough for the money: a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and dynamic road sign display all come as standard. Euro NCAP awarded the current car four stars, scoring 72% for adult occupant protection, 80% for child occupants, 80% for vulnerable road users and 71% for safety assist.
Leasing also side-steps the question reviewers keep raising about this car - what it'll be worth later. You agree a monthly rental for a fixed term and hand it back.
There are two, both purely combustion - nothing here needs plugging in. Petrol suits lower-mileage drivers who mostly potter locally; diesel suits longer trips and heavier towing.
The four-cylinder petrol produces 220 Nm, reaches 62 mph in 12.4 seconds and returns 39.7-41.5 mpg on the WLTP test, with CO2 of 155-162 g/km. It's the only way to get a manual gearbox, and braked towing is 1,300-1,400 kg depending on version.
With 320 Nm and a seven-speed automatic, the diesel is the relaxed one - 49.6 mpg on the WLTP test, 150 g/km of CO2, and 11.8 seconds to 62 mph. It also tows the most: up to 1,500 kg braked. If you're regularly loaded up or heading abroad, this is the sensible pick.

There's only one, so the real decision is engine, paint and options rather than trim level.
The single trim runs 16-inch "Wien" alloy wheels and cloth upholstery, and adds a multifunction leather steering wheel, rear-view camera, keyless central locking, dynamic road sign display and manually adjustable lumbar support in the front seats.
The options list is where it gets interesting. A fixed panoramic glass roof, heated front seats, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, active lane-change assist and traffic sign recognition are all available as factory options.
One practical note from arranging these contracts: factory options have to be specified before the order goes in, and they can't be added later. If the panoramic roof matters to you, tell us at the start. Twelve paint colours are offered across the range, from Candy white and Deep black to Costa Azul, Copper bronze, Fortana red, Golden Green and Mojave beige.

If the camping kit isn't the draw, the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi offers the same long body as a straight passenger MPV, while the Volkswagen Caddy California is the shorter-bodied camper. More of the range sits on our Volkswagen leasing pages.
