The Toyota Yaris offers an impressive hybrid supermini with a 1.5 litre petrol engine and battery producing 114bhp. The latest model is punchier than the previous one and it uses regenerative braking energy to boost battery power. Fuel economy is 57mpg with emissions of 86g/km. There's also a 1.5 litre petrol engine non-hybrid version available that produces 111 bhp with a choice of either a six-speed manual box and automatic transmission with fuel economy of 43 mpg to 46 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The first thing to mention about the Toyota Yaris, apart from its striking new exterior, is that the carmaker says that the hybrid could deliver up to 100 mpg with careful driving. They also add that most of the time spent driving around town can be done on battery power alone. That will be very attractive to potential buyers and there's a lot to like about the Yaris in a competitive segment. As a supermini, the Yaris delivers agile handling and it's a comfortable car to drive - even on long journeys, the car is composed. The suspension deals with rough roads and there's little in the way of body roll when cornering. Safety kit includes Toyota's 'safety sense' system which features emergency steering, lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. Depending on the model chosen, the equipment includes a rear view camera, rear parking sensors, lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking. Most trims feature road sign recognition and cruise control as well. The automatic CVT gearbox in the hybrid delivers a smooth driving experience and the three-cylinder petrol engine is a good performer. The interior for the car was completely re-fashioned when it was updated and it has a premium look and feel. The cabin also feels surprisingly spacious and there's room for tall adults in the rear seats and with a 286 litre boot, there's enough for shopping and small luggage. Essentially, the Toyota Yaris offers an excellent small hatchback for those who want an agile and cheap to run car that will meet most people's needs.
