The Toyota RAV4 is a five-seat family SUV, 4.60 metres long, sold as a 2.5-litre plug-in hybrid with an automatic gearbox and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. It's the sensible, do-everything option in this class rather than the flashy one.

It suits families and company car drivers who want one car for the school run and the motorway, and who can plug in at home or at work. Reviewers consistently praise the space, the comfort and the long electric range, while criticising cabin materials that feel hard-wearing rather than plush.

The choice is simple: one body, one plug-in hybrid powertrain with 268 to 305 bhp, and four trims - Icon, Design, Excel and GR Sport. A small number of previous-shape plug-in hybrid RAV4s may still be available while stocks last.

About the Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is Toyota's mainstream family SUV, sitting above the smaller crossovers and below the serious off-roaders in the range. This is the sixth-generation car, on sale in this form since 2026, and it stays deliberately boxy and upright.

The original helped invent the family SUV back in the 1990s, and the current one still leans on that rugged look. Five seats, 4.60 metres of length and a 2.69-metre wheelbase give it proper room for adults in the back.

Road testers rate it as comfortable and easy rather than exciting, with light steering and good visibility. It comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, a 12-year anti-corrosion guarantee, and it scores five stars from Euro NCAP.

Why lease a Toyota RAV4?

Because the RAV4 is generously equipped from the entry trim up, and the kit that matters on a family car is standard across the range. Every version gets navigation, Apple CarPlay, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel and a powered tailgate.

Safety is a strong point. Autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, automatic high beam, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors are fitted to every RAV4, and the five-star Euro NCAP result includes 93% for adult occupant protection and 87% for child occupant protection.

Which RAV4 powertrain is right for me?

There's one powertrain to choose from, a plug-in hybrid, so the real decision is front- or all-wheel drive and how much power you want. Both are automatic.

Plug-in hybrid

A 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine works with a 22.7 kWh battery and electric drive, producing 268 to 305 bhp depending on version. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both available, 0-62 mph takes 5.8 to 7.6 seconds, and top speed is 112 mph.

If you can't plug in regularly, the engine does the work and you lose most of the point of the car. Charge it overnight and short daily journeys can run on electricity alone.

Which RAV4 trim should I choose?

Four trims, and the jump from Icon to Design brings most of the comfort kit. Excel is about materials, GR Sport about power and looks.

Icon

The entry trim is well equipped for the money: 18-inch dark grey machined alloys in a five-spoke style, LED headlights, Toyota Smart Connect navigation with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a leather gear shift with chrome surround, cloth upholstery, front parking sensors and front fog lights. The entry version has 268 bhp and front-wheel drive.

The Icon is currently available from £443.72 a month.

Design

Design is the comfort step. Over Icon it adds 20-inch black alloys, artificial leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an electrically adjustable driver's seat with memory, keyless entry and start, wireless phone charging, a digital instrument cluster, a heat pump, hands-free tailgate, lane-keep assist, a front leather armrest and white ambient footwell lighting.

The Design is currently available from £496.36 a month. Against the Icon, that is currently £52.63/mo more expensive.

Excel

Excel is mainly about the cabin finish. It swaps in genuine leather upholstery over Design, plus 20-inch black machined alloys in the five-spoke style, a power tailgate and front fog lights. Its entry version keeps the 268 bhp front-wheel-drive setup.

The Excel is currently available from £539.59 a month. Against the Design, that is currently £43.24/mo more expensive.

GR Sport

The GR Sport starts at 305 bhp with all-wheel drive, and it's the quickest and most assertive-looking RAV4. Over Excel it adds 20-inch machined alloys, front sports seats, a head-up display, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, paddle shifters, a heat pump, digital instruments and front parking sensors, though reviewers note it's firmer-looking than it is sharp to drive.

The GR Sport is currently available from £545.23 a month. Against the Excel, that is currently £5.64/mo more expensive.

Two option packs are worth knowing about. The Pan Roof Pack brings leather door trim, front parking sensors, an adaptive cruise control switch on the steering wheel and white ambient footwell lighting, while the Moon Roof Pack fits the Skyview electric opening panoramic sunroof. Availability of packs varies by version, so check the individual deal.
