The Outback is one of the best equipped and best performing estates available today with great performance thanks to its all-wheel drive capability. The Outback also makes for a practical alternative choice for those who are attracted to owning an SUV and the renowned build quality and reliability of Subaru should underline its commitment to building cars that last. Indeed, the latest model of the Outback is a more rewarding experience than the car it replaces and is certainly more capable on- and off-road.
There's choice of three engines, a 2.0 litre diesel, a 2.5 litre petrol and a 3.6 litre petrol version which really have lots of speed and torque. The most economical of them is the diesel which will return around 44mpg, while the 3.6 litre petrol will return around 28mpg. All of the engines come with the option of an automatic gearbox called Lineartronic which was developed by Subaru to be a more effective CVT, or continuously variable transmission, than those offered by rivals.
Even with the excellent all-wheel drive provided by Subaru, the carmaker re-engineered the cars stability and handling to ensure it has greater levels of grip, no matter what the weather. Standard equipment levels are very good with even the entry-level model getting leather seats, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows and dual zone air con. There's also cruise control and automatic headlights and wipers. Other models get a rearview camera, keyless entry and satnav.
