Engines and performance for the Renault Clio
The Renault Clio offers five powertrains including one diesel, three petrols and a hybrid. There's a very good 1.0 litre petrol engine producing 100 PS and torque of 160Nm which is mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission. The diesel unit returns 79 mpg with torque of 220Nm and is a decent performer. The hybrid makes an appearance in the middle of 2020 and there's a pair of electric motors which use a 1.6 litre petrol unit to deliver an all-electric range of around 30 miles. Renault says fuel consumption in the hybrid Clio has been boosted by 40% and drivers could be using all-electric mode for 80% of their travels.
Equipment and handling
As the best selling French car ever, there's a lot to like about the new fifth-generation Renault Clio which was revamped in 2019. Along with fresh exterior styling, the interior was also refreshed to deliver a premium cabin offering. The cabin is larger while the car is stronger, safer and lighter than the one it replaced. There are four trim levels to choose from including a new RS Line. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control and DAB radio. There's also an advanced driver assistance system which features lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and autonomous emergency braking. Other models come with rear parking sensors and a parking pack to help park the car automatically. The top model, the Clio S features more customisation while the RS Line delivers a rear view camera, various driving modes and a 10-inch TFT instrument cluster. The Renault Clio has always been a great car to drive around town - its compact size delivers a nimble performance and nothing has changed with the new model. The grip is particularly good and it's agile on country roads and delivers power when necessary on motorway journeys. The car always feels well-planted when being put through its paces and the seats are very comfortable with the petrol engines delivering the nimble performance. Essentially, the Renault Clio is an excellent offering for those wanting a stylish supermini with lots of equipment and nice handling and this is a safe car to drive around town. It's up against stiff competition, but there's a lot to like about a French car that's proved to be an ever-popular presence on our streets.
