Engines and performance for the Renault Captur

The all-new Renault Captur offers five engine choices, including two diesels and three petrol engines. There's a choice of mating the engines to either a five- or six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission. The latest models also have a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid choice which is the first in its segment. The engine choices include a three-cylinder 1.0 litre engine, delivering 100hp and returning 54 mpg. The diesel engine is a 1.5 litre unit with four cylinders offering either 95hp or 115hp. Economy for the diesel is 58 mpg.

Equipment and handling

The latest version of the Renault Captur was revamped for 2020 and while the previous model had a lot to recommend it, the new version is more stylish and has more equipment. Also, the interior has been radically redesigned and it's a comfortable place to spend time. It's also the first Renault to showcase its plug-in hybrid technology and is stronger, lighter and safer than the model it replaces. There's a lot of safety equipment on board, including highway traffic jam companion, which delivers driver assistance and LED headlights are fitted as standard for each model. There are three trims to choose from and each offers a lot of standard equipment including the new 'smart cockpit' and featuring a 9.3-inch infotainment screen with smartphone connectivity. The cabin is spacious and the rear bench slides forwards to create more space and there's a fairly long list of options to help customise the Captur. Entry-level models feature a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity and DAB radio but not satnav. Other models do feature satnav and the interior offers a premium offering and is better for style than many of its rivals. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, cruise control, active emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and there's also the firm's e-Call system which will call emergency services after an accident. Other models come with rear and front parking sensors, privacy glass, roof bars and a driving mode selector. The Renault Captur handles extremely well around town, particularly with the petrol engine and it's a decent performer on motorways. The diesel delivers better performance over long journeys and the hybrid is a sound choice for those wanting to enjoy an all-electric driving range of 28 miles with speeds of up to 83 mph possible. The hybrid is a versatile and impressive offering and is mated to a new 1.6 litre petrol engine that has been developed especially for this purpose. Essentially, the Renault Captur offers a well-designed small SUV that will meet most people's needs wanting a car like this and the long list of equipment makes it worth shortlisting as it is a comfortable car to drive and enjoy.
